Jennifer Lopez says she experienced ‘misery’ any time she went against her ‘gut’

Lopez relies on her instincts to guide her career. However, this wasn’t always the case. She tells Rolling Stone she experienced “misery” every time she ignored her “gut.” Now, she checks in with herself to ensure she only makes decisions that feel right to her. Lopez didn’t provide details about a time she experienced misery after going against her intuition but says she paid the price.

“You start realizing there are no rules,” Lopez tells Rolling Stone. “There’s only what you feel is right for you. Because that’s the person you’ve got to live with at the end of the day. Any time I’ve gone against my gut and my instinct, I’ve ended in misery.”

The moment Jennifer Lopez knew her life changed forever

Lopez’s rise to fame began in the late 1990s. She says she knew her life had changed forever when she was in her hotel suite early in her career and she became aware of all the pairs of designer shoes she had.

“I was like, ‘I remember having holes in the bottom of my sneakers,’” Lopez tells the publication. “I was just like, ‘Is this happening?’ It was almost like a f***ing fairy tale. And it wasn’t about the wealth of it. It was about the change, the disparity in it. That hotel suite was bigger than the house I grew up in. Way bigger.”

Despite her success, Lopez says she felt like an underdog. She always had the feeling that she had to work harder than everyone else. She says that’s partly because of her background and upbringing.

“I always feel like I was scrapping from the bottom,” says Lopez in her Rolling Stone interview. “Always. I always felt like I wasn’t the one that was supposed to be in the room. That’s part of being Puerto Rican and from the Bronx and a woman. You know what I mean? All of that stuff. Not being born into a family with money. Not knowing anybody in the business. I just went out there and said, ‘F**** it. I’m going to just try. I’m going to try to get in here.’”

Jennifer Lopez says she has a lot in common with her ‘Marry Me’ character

Lopez is set to play Kat Valdez in her upcoming movie Marry Me, which also stars Owen Wilson. She says she has a lot in common with Kat, so the role was a natural fit for her. In the movie, Kat Valdez is a popular singer who finds out before her public wedding/concert that her husband-to-be cheated on her. Instead of calling off the ceremony, Kat marries a random stranger from the crowd.

“There’s a lot about [Kat] that only somebody like me could understand, right?” says Lopez. “I had to keep reminding myself: You know what it’s like to be onstage in front of an arena full of people and something embarrassing happens. That’s happened to you. What do you do? What does it feel like when it all falls apart and you go home and you’re on the TV and they’re making fun of you as if it’s not painful?”

Lopez says that like Kat, she has cried over some of the relationship drama she faced. “You know what?” says Lopez. “You’ve cried in a puddle on the floor too. That’s what it feels like. Or going underwater at that point where you feel like you’re drowning, suffocating in your own decisions that you know are not the right ones.”

Marry Me will be released this month. Maluma and Sarah Silverman also appear in the film.
