Why Jennifer Lopez ‘Didn’t Like’ Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs When She Met Him
Hip-hop mogul Sean “P. Diddy” Combs has been in the news more than ever in 2024 after Homeland Security raided two of his properties. Jennifer Lopez has also hit the headlines due to her reported marital struggles with Ben Affleck. Now, we’re looking back at Lopez and Comb’s relationship, as they dated for two years. Here’s what Lopez said about disliking Combs when she first met him.
Jennifer Lopez discussed her feelings toward Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs when she first met him
Jennifer Lopez and Sean “P. Diddy” Combs met on the set of Lopez’s music video for “If You Had My Love” in 1999, and they immediately hit it off. Lopez and Combs dated from 1999 to 2001, with Lopez claiming that Combs was unfaithful during their time together. After the breakup, Combs got back together with Kim Porter, his on-and-off girlfriend of 13 years.
Lopez and Combs were one of the music industry’s hottest couples at the time. However, Lopez revealed in an interview in 2000 that she didn’t like Combs when she first met him.
“He was larger than life, but at first, I didn’t like him at all,” Lopez said in an unearthed interview posted to YouTube. ” … I thought he was, like, you know, ick. I didn’t like him because Sean and I were very different that way; I was very family-oriented, and kind of the married type.”
Lopez added that she met Combs when she was married to Cris Judd. “When we first worked together on the video, I was married; even though I was going through problems, nobody knew that,” she explained. “I wanted my family. And even though, at that time, it was not going well, that was who I was. That was how I was raised.”
“Once I got to know him and we became friends first, we developed this bond,” Lopez continued. “We both understood where we were at that time in our lives, and we both knew nobody else understood exactly how we felt.”
She explained how she felt comforted by Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs after getting arrested
Jennifer Lopez and Sean “P. Diddy” Combs got into serious legal trouble during their relationship. In 1999, Lopez and Combs were at a nightclub in Times Square when an argument escalated between Combs and Matthew Allen, better known as “Scar.” Gunshots went off, and three people were injured. Combs and Lopez fled the scene and were eventually arrested.
“Sitting there, being handcuffed to a bench, I do remember feeling the comfort of someone caring about you enough that they just wanted to make it OK, and couldn’t believe we were in this situation of how did this happen,” Lopez explained during the 2000 interview.
Jennifer Lopez’s mother ‘worried’ about her daughter
In another past interview with ABC, Jennifer Lopez revealed how her mother “worried” about her dating Sean “P. Diddy” Combs.
“She liked him and didn’t like him, you know what I mean?” Lopez said, according to an interview posted to YouTube. “Honestly, she worried about me, just like any mom. I don’t think I’ve ever been with anybody who she ‘love’ loved. Nobody’s good enough. She was like that with every boyfriend I had.”
In yet another interview, Lopez added that she and Combs “just didn’t have the same kind of ideals about life and family.”
“It just wasn’t a good relationship for me,” she said.
