Jennifer Lopez Is Not Likely to Request Half of Ben Affleck’s Assets in Divorce, Attorney Says
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck tied the knot two years ago, but their love story spans decades. The couple first fell in love in the early 2000s and broke up in 2004. They went on to have separate marriages and divorces before falling back in love in 2021. Unfortunately, sources claim the couple wants to divorce. Some additional sources claim that Lopez is after half of Affleck’s assets. But a divorce attorney says that’s likely not the case.
Jennifer Lopez probably won’t request half of Ben Affleck’s assets in the event of a divorce
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck might not stay married through the rest of 2024. The couple reportedly has compatibility issues, leading them to Splitsville. According to Yahoo, a source told Radar Online that Lopez wants half of Affleck’s $150 million fortune.
So, why does Lopez allegedly want the money? “One of the little-known secrets is Jennifer paid for much of their marital expenses, and now she feels he owes her,” the source alleged. “She’s adding up all those private jet bills she puts on her plastic, the hotels, and meals, clothes, coffee runs, gas. The high cost of living was done on her dime. She paid the lion’s share for that $60 million mansion they bought, too.”
Attorney Jacqueline Newman from the matrimonial law firm Berkman Bottger Newman & Schein LLP in Manhattan said in a statement to Showbiz Cheat Sheet that Lopez likely doesn’t want Affleck’s money.
“I do not think that Jennifer Lopez is really requesting half of Ben Affleck’s assets,” Newman shared. “To begin with, there is undoubtedly a prenuptial agreement which protects both of their assets acquired before the marriage (and probably acquired during the marriage as well). The issue seems to be a request by Lopez for reimbursement of expenses paid during the marriage, as she states that Affleck did not pay his fair share. Whether that is an issue to fight about, it could depend on what their prenuptial agreement says.”
Newman added that she expects the divorce to settle “quietly” to “avoid a media frenzy.”
“Whether Affleck will make some payment to Lopez to equalize their contributions is unlikely as he will more likely claim that the expenses were incurred due to her preferences rather than his,” she continued. “I cannot see these two people litigating in a court whether they should have equally divided the cost of vacations, private planes, and dinners!”
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck might not have a prenup
Divorce attorney Jacqueline Newman says Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck “undoubtedly” have a prenup. But additional sources question this. A source told The Mirror that Lopez likely wanted a postnup.
“Jen’s got more to lose than Ben, and while she trusts in her gut that he wouldn’t try to take her to the cleaners, there’s a ‘better safe than sorry’ vibe, especially with so much on the line,” the source told the publication. “It’s not uncommon for couples in Hollywood to arrange these types of formal documents a year or two into their marriage. So, they’re being sensible, but it still isn’t an ideal scenario off the back of so much tension and trouble.”
The couple officially listed their home for sale in July 2024
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck officially put their Beverly Hills mansion up for sale in July 2024. They listed the mansion for $68 million. The listing on Zillow states that the couple “recently renovated” the mansion “with the highest level of quality.” The home has 12 bedrooms, 24 bathrooms, and over five acres.
Current rumors suggest Lopez lives alone in the home. Affleck lives in a $100,000 monthly rental near Jennifer Garner’s home. Now that the couple has put the house up for sale, they seem closer than ever to announcing an official separation.
