Before fame, Jennifer Lopez spent years with the same boyfriend, David Cruz. She described him as the “nicest guy” and said that he helped her navigate her first terrible years in Los Angeles. While Lopez loved him deeply, she said her family did not feel the same way. She shared why they didn’t approve of her dating him.

Jennifer Lopez said her family did not like one of her boyfriends

When Lopez turned 16, she began dating Cruz. He would become her boyfriend of nearly a decade, and she quickly began shaping her life around him.

“That was the start of the boyfriend years,” she told Rolling Stone of her teenage years. “It was all about the house and family until I was sixteen; then I fell in love, and it was all about sneaking away from the house and family.”

She said their love was pure and that they were extremely dedicated to one another. She believed this relationship turned her into someone who loved love.

“I was always climbing out windows, jumping off roofs, and he was sneaking up,” she said. “It was crazy. I had a pure first love, which is probably why I am the way I am. It was an unconditional kind of love. Then we just grew up and grew apart.”

While Lopez thought Cruz was a great guy, her family disapproved. Her parents were strict.

“Nicest guy,” Lopez said. “My family didn’t like him, though. I guess your family always thinks you can find someone better. They all like him now. I think they were just afraid I was going to get pregnant.”

He moved to Los Angeles with her early in her career

Lopez and Cruz eventually broke up, but they got back together a year after she moved to LA to film In Living Color. She had been miserable in the city and he helped make it bearable for her.

“It didn’t get better until the second year,” she said. “David and I got back together, and he moved to L.A., and that made it more bearable. He wound up staying out there for four years with me. I was stable at home, so I was able to excel and work. He was my stability — I didn’t have to worry about anything else with him there.”

They were together for nearly 10 years before breaking up for good.

Jennifer Lopez’s mother reportedly warned her about another one of her boyfriends

Cruz wasn’t the only one of Lopez’s boyfriends whom her family disliked. After she began dating Sean “Diddy” Combs in 1999, the couple became involved in a nightclub shooting. They fled the scene and Lopez spent 14 hours in jail. Police did not charge her with anything.

According to former NYPD Detective Derrick Parker, Lopez’s mother was furious with her daughter after the shooting.

“Her mother was yelling at J.Lo in Spanish and she was really mad at Jennifer,” Parker claimed in a conversation with The New York Post. “I heard her say, ‘I told you not to get involved with (him).’”
