Jennifer Lopez said she found 1 famous rapper cute
Lopez grew up in the Bronx, and she said her favorite rapper is from a different New York City borough. She said that in her mind, few people could beat Nas.
“Nas is one of my favorite rappers of all time,” she said in a 2019 conversation with #CRWN’s Elliott Wilson (via Billboard). “Probably number one. No, he’s my number one. I haven’t heard anyone rap who hits me in that same way. That New York sensibility that he has, he sounds like the guys I grew up with — that raspy voice and that delivery, but he’s so intelligent, and I’ve always felt that he was so smart and I just love his style.”
Still, she said there were other artists she admired, including Big Pun, Fat Joe, The Notorious B.I.G, and Lil Wayne. She said she liked that Lil Wayne referred to her as Miss Lopez in their song “I’m Into You.”
“He did call me Miss Lopez on a song like I was a teacher,” she said. “So cute.”
Jennifer Lopez’s song with Lil Wayne was well received
In 2011, Lopez and Lil Wayne collaborated on the song “I’m Into You.” When Lopez discussed his feature on the song, she ranked him as her favorite rapper. She said that while Nas had once been in the top spot, she liked Lil Wayne’s “very unique” and “fresh” voice.
“Plus he’s on my single!” she added, per MTV.
“I’m Into You” peaked at No. 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 and hit 19 on the pop charts. It also received primarily positive reviews from critics. They praised Lopez’s voice, Lil Wayne’s wordplay, and the song’s overall catchy irresistibility.
Jennifer Lopez recalled the first rap song she fell in love with
Years before Lopez discovered Nas or Lil Wayne, she fell in love with her first rap song while on the playground at school. She recalled hearing the song “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang and feeling almost transfixed by it. She said she had never heard anything like it before in her life.
“I was in the schoolyard and I remember getting really excited,” she explained. “It was a defining moment. I’d never heard anything like it, I’d never heard rap like that, to that type of music. I just fell in love with it, and became sort of a fanatic.”
Over the years, Lopez has collaborated with a number of rappers, including all of those she listed as her favorites. She has also worked with artists like LL Cool J, Ja Rule, Jadakiss, and French Montana.
