What was Jennifer Lopez’s family life like growing up?

Lopez was born on July 24, 1969, to parents from Puerto Rico. She grew up in the Bronx. Lopez has two sisters and is the middle child. Her younger sister is journalist Lynda Lopez.

Lopez’s family is devout Catholic. She attended Catholic institutions, such as the all-girls Preston High School.

Lopez and her sisters started singing and dancing at a young age. She even took dance classes. According to Fox News, after Lopez graduated high school, she attended one semester of college before dropping out to pursue a dance career. Her parents did not support this endeavor, so Lopez moved out of the family home.

Lopez continued to study dance and eventually started landing professional jobs in the late 1980s. Then, in the 1990s, Lopez began pursuing acting work, which eventually led her to become the celebrity she is known as today.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Lopez shared that fame has not necessarily been easy on her family. In fact, she feels like her parents are “confused” about her life as a celebrity.

“When one person becomes famous in a family it causes a lot of discord,” Lopez explained. “It can be complicated for both sides. It got complicated for me, like, ‘Is this still, you know, my family who loves me and accepts me and understands me and feels like I’m the same person, or do they see me as different as well?’”

She added, “For them, it was like, ‘OK, well, now she’s this, and what does that mean? How much do I expect? How much do I ask for and how much do I not?’ There’s confusion. There’s resentment and very mixed, complicated, adult feelings. You know, ‘What is all this?’”

Lopez has twins named Maximilian “Max” and Emme from her previous marriage to singer Marc Anthony. The twins were born in 2008.

As children of celebrities, Max and Emme live a very different life from the one Lopez knew growing up. For example, Lopez owns expensive homes in a few cities, so her kids can enjoy a comfortable living no matter where they go.

Additionally, Lopez wants to raise them in a different way than her parents raised their kids. She told Rolling Stone, “I really feel like [my mom] did the best she could. And when I think of it that way, it’s easier to get past the punishments and the spankings and things that happened. I don’t want to raise my kids in that way, but I understand.”
