Ben Affleck seemed to learn a lot about himself while he was in a relationship with ex-wife Jennifer Lopez. One of the things the Hustlers actor helped him realize was how much he needed to loosen up.

How Jennifer Lopez helped Ben Affleck open up

Affleck decided Lopez was right regarding how defensive the Air star could be from time to time. Lopez has always offered a certain level of transparency that her former significant other didn’t. On top of being an actor and singer, Lopez is very active on social media. She’s offered her followers advice for years on relationships and beauty routines while providing a window into her personal life. Affleck witnessed the power of Lopez’s brand after the two tried to spend a night out.

“We get out with her, all the kids, through Times Square, and the s*** was, like, f***in’ bananas. I was like, ‘Oh, my God.’ There was a lady, she was smoking weed, in a full purple skintight suit. She’s a heavy lady, and she starts running backward filming, going ‘J.Lo!’ like a herald. Then gets everyone else. They’re all tourists, whatever, just moving,” Affleck said not too long ago in a Hart to Heart interview.

Affleck, however, isn’t on social media at all. Although he’s been known to be candid in interviews, Lopez felt Affleck could open up more.

“I don’t know if there’s anybody who understands Instagram better than her,” Affleck once told The Hollywood Reporter. “In fact, she gave me a talk this morning before this interview. She thinks that because of experiences I’ve had, I’ve become very guarded. And she’s right. I view these things as land mines, where if you say one wrong thing, your career might be over.”

Affleck pointed to an interview he did where he discussed Jennifer Garner and his bout with alcoholism. The Daredevil actor felt his words were misinterpreted. This led to the kind of headache he didn’t want to go through often.

“So, yeah. It’s hard,” Affleck said. “But anyway, so [Jennifer Lopez] tells me today, ‘Relax, be yourself. Have fun. You’re actually a fun guy who is real and genuine, and you just seem so serious.’ Do I seem serious? But as in many things, she’s really right. And she loves me. She’s looking out for me. She’s trying to help me. So it’s like, maybe I ought to f***ing listen to her.”

Ben Affleck wished Jennifer Lopez wasn’t so open about their relationship problems

After their divorce, it seems Lopez’s openness might concern Affleck, who may allegedly prefer to keep their issues more private. Lopez recently visited Interview with Nikki Glaser to discuss several topics, including her highly publicized divorce from the Gone Girl star. According to Ok!, Affleck saw the interview coming to an extent. But he wasn’t all that happy about it.

“Ben knows that she will talk about the breakup forever. He would love for her not to talk about it. But he feels she will always speak out,” a source once told the publication.

At the same time, however, Affleck is fine with Lopez using whatever methods she needs to move on from their relationship.

“People deal with loss and break up their own way, and this is what Jen had to do, and Ben has to accept it,” the source added.

Meanwhile, Affleck has chosen to deal with his martial issues more privately. The Gigli actor hasn’t said anything about his divorce since he and Lopez announced their split in a joint statement.
