Recently, an old headshot of Trebek started making the rounds on Reddit, and fans had a lot to say about the photograph.

When was Alex Trebek born?

Trebek was born in Ontario in 1940. The son of a prestigious chef, Trebek grew up in an educated household and spoke several languages growing up.

After graduating from college with a degree in philosophy in 1961, Trebek began pursuing a career in broadcast news. He was active on the school debate team when in college, which gave him unparalleled communication skills and the ability to have a conversation with just about anyone. These skills gave Trebek the right credentials for media and broadcasting.

In 1961, immediately after his graduation, Trebek began working for CBC, filling in for all the station’s announcers. A few of Trebek’s early specialties included announcing special events and covering horse racing.

After several years at CBC, Trebek began thinking about expanding his horizons and working towards a more lucrative career in television. Fortunately for Trebek, he didn’t have to wait long for his first big break.

Alex Trebek became the host of ‘Jeopardy!’

In 1963, Trebek’s television career took off when he became the host of Music Hop, a Canadian television show. Over the next several years, Trebek bounced around to a variety of different programs, including The Wizard of Odds, Strategy, and Double Dare.

In addition to his hosting work, Trebek made the rounds to various other game shows as a guest. By the late seventies, Trebek was one of the most familiar faces on television — and his star was about to shine a lot brighter.

Trebek was hired as the host of Jeopardy! in 1984. The game show had been around for nearly two decades by that time and had gone through several format changes.

The hiring of Trebek helped to make the show even more popular, and it quickly became the dominant game show on television. Trebek has remained as the host of Jeopardy! ever since, and although he has experienced some ups and downs in terms of his health, he has remained committed to the show that made him a star.
