Canada native Mattea Roach recently got into double-digit victory territory on Jeopardy!. Now with her 11th consecutive win, Roach matched former champ Jonathan Fisher’s total and keeps climbing the rankings in the upcoming Tournament of Champions. Fans are cheering on the Toronto resident to stay at the game show podium and add to her $244,882 jackpot.
Mattea Roach and Jonathan Fisher are neck-and-neck in ‘Jeopardy!’ wins
Fisher became a household name after putting an end to Jeopardy! champ Matt Amodio’s epic winning streak in season 38. The Florida resident went on to win a total of 11 games and a secured spot in the Tournament of Champions, where he may face off with Amodio once again.
Roach just clinched her 11th victory on April 19, tying Fisher’s total. Jeopardy’s website continues to track the rankings for the 2022 TOC, with Roach steadily heading toward the top of the list. Currently a tutor for the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT), the 23 year old had her eye on making the TOC cut when five victories was within reach.
“It feels wild,” Roach said, according to Jeopardy.com. “After the fourth game I was thinking, ‘I really want to be in that TOC,’ especially with the incredible season, and all the amazing streaks and fantastic players that have been on.”
As for facing record breakers Amodio and Amy Schneider, Roach has a positive attitude. “I will probably lose to them – but it will be an honor to lose to them,” she remarked.

“I am definitely interested in hearing more stories from that one. She’s cool!” a fan remarked.
“She’s amazing!! Full of confidence personality knowledge. She must have amazing parents,” a follower noted.

Former ‘Jeopardy!’ champs comment on importance of the buzzer
Buzzing in before your opponents to respond to a Jeopardy! clue is key in winning each game. Fisher pointed out how buzzer timing can make or break a victory record.
“The buzzer is tricky,” Fisher wrote in an article for Newsweek. “The contestants get buzzer practice at the beginning of the day so we get a feel for it, but if you go back and watch all of Matt’s shows, he’s not always ringing in on time, and you can also see all the other contestants hitting their buzzers constantly. It’s all a matter of catching the clue right as it ends. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the buzzers – it’s just designed to be a very difficult game to master!”
Jeopardy! champ Schneider racked up 40 wins during her epic run and also shared how buzzer proficiency is essential for succeeding on the game show.
“Buzzer timing is also critical,” she shared, according to Defector. “The fact that I have, for whatever reason, been good at that aspect has been a vital part of my success.”
