‘Jersey Shore’ Fans Compare Will Smith’s Oscar Slap to Angelina Pivarnick’s Wedding Speech Reaction

Some MTV viewers found similarities between the King Richard star’s reaction to Chris Rock’s G.I. Jane joke and Angelina Pivarnick’s response to her Jersey Shore castmates’ speech at her wedding. Will Smith infamously slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars
Smith slapped Rock after he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss during his presentation, saying: “Jada, I love ya. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it.” In a 2018 segment for Red Table Talk, Pinkett Smith revealed that she has alopecia, an autoimmune condition that attacks hair follicles.
After seemingly laughing at the remark, Smith got up, walked on stage, and slapped Rock. U.S. censors cut the audio for viewers during the incident, but other countries aired Rock’s reaction: “Will Smith smacked the s*** out of me.”
Since then, Smith has publicly apologized to Rock and a host of others in a statement. Smith resigned from the Academy on April 1, making him ineligible for future awards.

“Will Smith’s Oscar moment reminded me of Angelina’s wedding,” said one Redditor. Angelina married Chris Larangeira in November 2019. MTV filmed the ceremony and reception for Jersey Shore: Family Vacation Season 3, which ended with a speech delivered by Jenni “JWoww” Farley, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, and Deena Cortese. The cast of Jersey Shore: Family Vacation has moved on from the drama that resulted in the speech, but that didn’t stop fans from comparing Smith and Angelina’s reactions.
“I was doing a rewatch of Angelina’s wedding and realized how similar things went down,” the Reddit user continued. “Both were laughing at a roast joke [and] both looked at their spouses and saw disappointment, realized they shouldn’t have laughed, and both proceeded to create drama at a fancy event to compensate for the wrong reaction.”
In Oscar footage, Smith laughs at Rock’s joke before getting up and hitting him. Similarly, Angelina laughed at her roommates’ speech during her wedding but got mad about it after the fact. Angelina later said she laughed because she was uncomfortable, which many Reddit users think Smith was doing at the Oscars.
“I guess people don’t realize a lot of people laugh when they are uncomfortable as well?” reads one Reddit user’s comment. “I certainly do. A lot of times I need time to process. I’m not a good quick reactor except in safety cases.”
Chris Rock’s joke was unscripted, the ‘Jersey Shore’ casts’ was not
According to Entertainment Weekly, Rock’s joke about Pinkett Smith wasn’t in the original script for the ABC telecast. “I can say the joke itself was not in the script,” the industry source told the outlet. “With a live show and comedians, there are always jokes not in [the] script. There’s that idea of shock and then [figuring] out what just happened and going from there.”
Unlike Rock’s adlibbed joke, the cast of Jersey Shore: Family Vacation read their speeches, though it’s not sure who came up with their jokes. Later, “Snooki” admitted she never wanted to do a speech.
“I literally told producers, ‘I’m not going to do a speech because I’m not comfortable doing one; I don’t think we should be doing one,'” Nicole told The Ashley Reality Roundup. “We were forced to do something we didn’t want to do.”
The cast of Jersey Shore: Family Vacation has since moved on from Angelina’s wedding speech drama. It’s unclear when the world will be ready to do the same with what happened between Rock and Smith at the 2022 Oscars.
