Jessica Biel felt like she’d found her true partner in husband Justin Timberlake. So much so that Biel thought, without the family she created, she’d be a mess.

Biel and Timberlake share two kids from a long 12-year marriage. They had two sons born in 2015 and 2017. As is the case with many, becoming a mother was a huge adjustment period for the actor. But Biel couldn’t gush enough about the experience. Although it came with its challenges, the benefits of motherhood seemed to far outweigh the drawbacks.

“It’s sometimes hard to find the words [to describe motherhood]. So amazing. So lovely. I’m over the moon,” Biel once told People (via Toronto). “Honestly, I would say motherhood [is the most difficult role I’ve done]. It’s probably the most challenging job in the world, but also the most joyous.”

Biel also felt motherhood made her more emotionally grounded, which sometimes even helped with her career. As an actor, Biel could sometimes adopt roles that could have a profound impact on her. This happened on The Sinner, where she played a troubled woman at the center of a mysterious crime. The emotional toll the role took on Biel was softened by her interaction with Timberlake and her family.

“I do not want to bring that home. It is so intense,” she said. “Thank goodness for [my family] because otherwise I’d be a depressive mess, like a blob on the floor eating cake balls consistently. I come back and I have fun and I smile and I get to be silly because at work, I don’t get to do that.”

How Jessica Biel used her acting on her children

Biel’s motherhood not only had an affect on her acting. But her acting also had an affect on her motherhood. In a resurfaced interview with USA Today, the Blade star reflected on a typical day she’d have with her kids. One of the activities she enjoyed doing with them was adopting different voices to speak to her sons with. It was a hobby that benefited from her time in front of the camera.

“I have about a hundred different voices that I talk to [my son] in,” she said. “Every stuffed animal has a voice and a stupid story. It’s silly, fun make-believe. I go back to my kid in me, and I play. It’s really fun. And if anyone else heard it, it would be ridiculous.”

Speaking on The Drew Barrymore Show, Biel confided that there were still certain challenges about motherhood she was getting used to. Juggling her acting career with her duties as a parent proved to be the most difficult process of it all despite her parenting experience.

“It’s not easy sort of balancing your whole life trying to be around your kids and spend time with your partners and friends, and time for yourself and then also your career,” she said. “It’s so hard.”

Biel has tried to convince herself that she’s managed to multi-task her obligations well enough. But over time, she’s discovered it’s more stressful than she hoped it’d be.

“I don’t think I’ve done it well necessarily yet,” she said. “I feel like I’m constantly being pulled in a million directions, and I think I do that thing where I’m like, ‘It’s all great,’ and inside is like a crazy turmoil of ocean waves crashing and I’m freaking out about trying to figure it all out.”
