Jessica Simpson‘s marriage to husband Eric Johnson is no more. The two are calling it quits after more than 10 years together. But what led to their split? “Trust issues” reportedly played a role in the breakdown of their marriage.

‘Trust issues’ plagued Jessica Simpson’s marriage to Eric Johnson

Speaking to Us Weekly, an insider shared there were “trust issues” between Simpson and her retired NFL player husband. “There were trust issues caused by the breakdown of their marriage,” the source said. “She’s sad [about the split] but knows she had to make a tough decision.”

The 44-year-old publicly announced her split from Johnson in a statement on Jan. 13, 2025, after months of divorce rumors, saying they’d been living separately while “navigating a painful situation” in their marriage.

Part of the so-called “trust issues” stemmed from Johnson allegedly being seen flirting with women at a bar, a Simpson source said. “Jessica is not [the type of] woman to put up with anything,” another insider said. “She’s independent, and she has her own mind and money and her family’s support.”

Another sore spot in their marriage might’ve been work. A fourth source claimed Simpson and Johnson had different career goals. Johnson retired from the NFL in 2007. Meanwhile, Simpson pivoted from a career in music  to build The Jessica Simpson Collection, of which she’s CEO.

“Jessica has been incredibly generous with Eric,” the first source said. “She’s never had any resentment because she looks at them as a family. Anything that has been earned has been for her family, and they all contribute in different ways. He’s tried to find his place career-wise, and she has always supported that.”

Simpson and Johnson tried to make their marriage work only to realize ‘they want different things’

Before deciding to split the couple tried to work on their marriage. “They’d done counseling before, but it didn’t get them anywhere, and Jessica wasn’t interested in doing it again,” a fifth source said.

Finally, it got to the point where Simpson and the former NFL player were done trying. “They’ve had enough of the back-and-forth and ups and downs. They want different things.” By November 2024, when a cryptic Instagram post of Simpson’s fueled split rumors, she referred to herself as single privately, saying she wanted a divorce.

A Simpson source told the outlet the singer split her time between Nashville, Tenn., and California for the last year. Meanwhile, she and Johnson had “slowly been separating their lives and figuring out what’s next.”

As for the “With You” singer’s legal split, the Simpson source shared that the 44-year-old has a prenuptial agreement with Johnson. However, that doesn’t mean they’re in for a speedy divorce. Things “could get messy,” the source said.

So, while they might’ve agreed to terms before they said “I do” in Montecito, Calif., in 2014, Simpson and Johnson may want different things more than 10 years later.

Previously, Simpson admitted she regretted not signing a prenup with her ex-husband, Nick Lachey, the former 98 Degrees band member she was married to from 2002 to 2006.

Already in the works is offloading Simpson and Johnson’s Hidden Hills, Calif., home. The pair purchased the 13,274-square-foot property in 2013. It went on the market on Jan. 11, 2025, just two days before Simpson announced their split

“She wants to sell the house because there are too many memories there,” a source said. “Jessica wants a fresh start. She wants to move on.”
