Singer-songwriter Jewel is a ’90s girl power icon and a current day inspiration for body positivity. She recently took to Instagram to share her takes on aging at 47, and she shared a sexy snap in support of her argument. Plus, she revealed some of the early hardships she personally faced as a young person coming into the ’90s music scene.

Jewel was body-shamed in the ‘90s

Unfortunately, Jewel revealed that she had the same experience as many others trying to break into a harsh industry. She shares on an Instagram post that she was called a “chubby” Renée Zellweger when she “came in the scene in the ’90s.”

But she noted that she was very aware of the possible outcomes of listening to such toxic noise, and she wouldn’t allow those options for herself. She recalls avoiding eating disorders and says, “I had to learn to be healthy my own way and find my way to self-love.”

Despite the bullying, she wanted to learn to love herself unconditionally. So, she refused to change certain things. She notes, “I never fixed my teeth or my nose because I felt like I wanted to know how to love myself no matter what.”

She says she learned to “be thankful for the looks [she does] have, and not take them for granted just because [she] wasn’t classically perfect.”

And it’s pretty hard to argue with her body positive approach to beauty at this point!

Jewel celebrated being 47 on Instagram

Jewel said she felt uncertainty about aging, but it wasn’t something that scared her. “I wasn’t sure what getting older would feel like,” the mother of one shares in the caption to her red hot Instagram post. “I was never afraid of it luckily.”

She notes, “I’ve loved every year,” but adds, “my business and the world, really, is not kind to aging women.”

So, she made a promise “to ‘do no harm’ to [herself]” and to “try to be kind … in a business notoriously s***ty about women’s bodies.”

And for her, that means taking care with basics. She suggests, “Eat well. Drink water. Rest. And bring it on!”

All that isn’t to say that Jewel found a way to not age at all. The mental health advocate shares, “My skin is changing. Gravity definitely takes its toll. But I’m surprised by how good I feel.”

She clarifies that means she feels “vital … happy … healthy,” then adds, “And yeah, I feel sexy.” She even offers some advice for achieving the same: “Be kind to yourself. Enjoy the hell out of your life.”

More specifically? That could mean sexually, as she suggests, “Sleep with who you want, because you want to. Not because you need to feel validated.”

But she also recommends, “Eat what you want because you want to.” Furthermore, she says you should wear what you want without fear “of how it will look on you.” She shares, “Your worth lies in your wisdom and your joy.”

And as final little nugget of self-love, she says, “Don’t be bullied out of enjoying your own life! Feel the sensuous joy of being alive. And absorb every single bit of pleasure out of this life.”

Her fans are apparently glad to know her secrets and are loving the results. “Goals. Inside and out,” one Instagram user notes, seconded by many others.
