Jill Duggar and her husband, Derick Dillard, removed themselves from Counting On back in 2017. It was initially rumored that the two left the show because of comments Derick made about other TLC stars, but it has since been learned that Jill and Derick actually parted ways with her family because of deeper problems. And Jill recently opened up about how her family’s “control” over their own lives was “taken away” by her parents.

Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard left ‘Counting On’ abruptly in 2017

When 19 Kids and Counting was canceled back in 2015 after Josh Duggar’s sexual abuse scandals came to light, the show was replaced with Counting On. The new series followed Jessa and Jill Duggar as they started their own families. While things seemed fine at first, Jill and Derick eventually stopped filming the show without giving fans much of an explanation.

There were rumors that the two were fired from the show over Derick’s transphobic comments toward TLC star Jazz Jennings, but Derick later went on a Twitter rant about how his father-in-law was the real reason he and his wife left the show. The two have given some detail about why they’ve separated from Duggar’s parents, but until now, the whole truth was unclear.

Jill Duggar recently opened up about her parents taking away her ‘control’

Derick and Jill have somewhat spent time with Jill’s family, though it’s clear there are still problems. Fans thought Jill looked uncomfortable in a recent photo with Michelle, and she also revealed in a Q&A that she was afraid to make her own choices.

In a recent interview with People, Jill opened up even more about what happened between her and her parents. “Our control to choose what jobs we were allowed to accept and even where we were allowed to live was taken away from us,” Jill said. She also noted that she and Derick had personal goals that their parents would strike down if they didn’t fit into the network or family’s plans.

“The first few years of our marriage, we spent time and money working towards opportunities only to hit a dead end when we’d be told, ‘Well, you’re not allowed to do that.’” The couple also revealed that their decision to leave the show didn’t go over well with the family – that tension appears to be what fans notice today.

Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar didn’t have much to say about their relationship with their daughter

Michelle and Jim Bob have kept quiet about their strained relationship with Jill and Derick. The two did wish Derick a happy birthday, and Michelle has joined Jill and her other sisters for a girls’ day out in the past. But when it came to discussing family problems, Michelle and Jim Bob didn’t say much.

“Every family has differences of opinion and perspective at times, but families work things out,” the couple told People in a statement. “We all love Jill, Derick, and their boys very much. It is our prayer that our relationship is healed and fully restored quickly!” It’s unclear if Jill speaking out will create an opportunity for the family to move past all of this, but fans hope they can become one unit again.
