Jim Carrey Will Leave These Trilogies Unfinished If He Retires
Jim Carrey might be about to stop making movies. It’s a reality perhaps his fans aren’t ready to face. However, the actor — currently starring as the villainous Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 — recently revealed he could be about to step away from Hollywood. If Carrey does indeed leave the business behind, he would be leaving these popular movies one film short of an entire trilogy.
Jim Carrey has played a pair of characters created by author Dr. Seuss
In 2000, Carrey earned rave reviews and a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as the titular curmudgeon in Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The movie has gone on to become a holiday classic and remains one of the actor’s most commercially successful movies. But many Carrey fans might forget he also played another Dr. Seuss hero as the voice of Horton the elephant in 2008’s Horton Hears a Who.
With so many other Seuss books still unadapted for the screen, it feels like a missed opportunity to rob Carrey of the chance to play another of the beloved children’s author’s characters, whether animated or in live action. Carrey as Yertle the Turtle, Sam-I-Am, or one of the Sneetches? Yes, please. One way the actor could tie up his Seuss trilogy would be if he starred in that rumored Seuss biopic. Here’s hoping it happens.
The actors co-starred with Jeff Daniels in the ‘Dumb and Dumber’ movies
Carrey and Jeff Daniels brought surprising chemistry to the screen in 1994’s Dumb and Dumber. The movie capped off the most pivotal year in Carrey’s career as one of three huge hits he starred in. And over the years, fans have continued to revisit the movie. So much so that directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly reunited with Carrey and Daniels 20 years later for a sequel.
Dumb and Dumber To wasn’t exactly embraced by fans or critics. But it did make money at the box office. Is there room for Harry (Daniels) and Lloyd (Carrey) to go on one more adventure? Maybe, maybe not. But the fact that the actors are one film short of a comedy trilogy should help motivate them to explore their options. Perhaps a strong third chapter could redeem the series after the second one fell short.
Will Jim Carrey return for the announced third ‘Ace Ventura’ movie?
With just about every beloved 1990s franchise getting dusted off, the big question is whether Carrey will ever play Ace Ventura again. After all, Dumb and Dumber already got its long-overdue sequel. 1994’s Ace Ventura: Pet Detective got a fast-tracked sequel the very next year in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. And it seemed like the series was deader than dead, especially after the embarrassing 2009 spinoff Ace Ventura Jr.: Pet Detective.
Then in 2019, news broke that a proper Ace Ventura 3 was in development with Sonic the Hedgehog writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Their connection to Carrey seemed like an indication the actor would return. But there’s been little to no update since. Carrey did recently admit he’d return as the pet detective if Christopher Nolan directed the new film. But that doesn’t seem very likely, now does it?
