Comedic mastermind Joan Rivers passed away several years ago. She lived a long life, but it’s always sad to see a legend die. Were she still alive, the woman who many considered the funniest who ever lived would have turned 86 this month. Here’s a look back at her life, career, and wealth.

Here’s how she became famous

Rivers began performing in the late 1950s and early ‘60s. She performed at famous clubs like The Gaslight Cafe at the same time as George Carlin and Woody Allen. Rivers also appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson many times. In the ‘70s, she broke out on TV, and also became a fixture on Broadway.

It was in the ‘90s that River entered into the world that made her well-known to today’s audience: Host on award show red carpets. Additionally, she wrote 13 books and put out several comedy albums over the course of her lifetime. Rivers was nominated for many awards, including a Tony. She won a Daytime Emmy and a Grammy.

Rivers passed away in 2014

Rivers was still working at the time of her death. She had a cameo in Iron Man 3, which came out in 2013 and appeared in episodes of Hot in Cleveland which aired in 2012. Rivers hosted Fashion Police on E! as well as her own internet talk show, In Bed With Joan, up until her death in Aug. 2014.

Her death was, sadly, due to unforeseen complications during a minor procedure. She went into a medically induced coma which she never woke up from, passing at the age of 81. The cause of death was a lack of oxygen to the brain. Rivers would have been 86 this month if she were still alive.

Her daughter, Melissa, carries on her legacy

Joan is survived by her daughter, Melissa Rivers. Melissa and Joan worked together for many years on Fashion Police, and she produced many of their work, including the reality series Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?

According to her website, Melissa continues to work in beauty, fashion, and other areas that she and her mother were interested in. She also wrote three books, two of which are biographical accounts featuring anecdotes and images from her mothers’ life.
