Joan Vassos wasn’t a newbie to dating competitions when she became the first-ever golden bachelorette and found a new relationship. She competed in Gerry Turner’s season of The Golden Bachelor. While the Maryland native self-eliminated during the competition, she did take notes. Sure, Vassos didn’t make it far into the competition, but she did watch Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist’s love story unfold.

Ahead of her own season, she talked about how she would conduct herself during the show and after the finale. In fact, the mother of four mapped out her relationship timeline and how she envisioned a future wedding. Now, after meeting and falling for contestant Chock Chapple, she’s changing all the rules.

Joan Vassos previously said she’d avoid a quick, televised wedding

Joan Vassos didn’t start her journey to find a new relationship with the intent of becoming famous. Still, that’s how it worked out. All eyes have been on the widow for several months. Ahead of the September 2024 premiere of the first season of The Golden Bachelorette, Vassos sat down with CNN for a chat. She discussed her life and plans moving forward.

During the conversation, Vassos revealed that she wasn’t entirely sold on the idea of leaving the series engaged. She also said she had absolutely no intention of getting married quickly after the show if she did end up engaged when all was said and done. Vassos insisted that she wanted to get to know her partner in the “real world” for a while before making things official. Sure, Vassos didn’t lay down an actual timeline. Still, she certainly made it sound like she’d like to spend years dating rather than months before walking down the aisle. She also made it clear that a televised wedding wasn’t in the future. But things do change.

Joan is changing her take now that she’s fallen in love

Months ago, Joan Vassos said she wasn’t interested in planning a wedding shortly after her season ended. Things have apparently changed. During an appearance on Two Jersey J’s, Vassos revealed that while she wasn’t planning her wedding just yet, she would get started on the project sooner rather than later. The statement feels like a complete turnaround from what she told CNN, considering she wasn’t entirely sold on even leaving the series engaged.

Vassos also appears to be reconsidering her stance on a televised wedding. Initially, Vassos said she planned for an intimate affair with just family and friends. Since meeting Chapple, she’s opened up to the idea of a televised wedding. She told podcast hosts Jackie Goldschneider and Jennifer Fessler that her fans have seen her love story so far, so it would be nice for them to see it to completion with a televised wedding.

Whether that’s a good idea is anyone’s guess. After all, it didn’t work out terribly well for Thersa Nist and Gerry Turner, the first golden couple. Their televised wedding aired just months after their season ended. Three months later, they announced their divorce.
