The 1 Thing Joanna Gaines Keeps in Mind When Designing Her Home
In her latest Magnolia blog post, Joanna Gaines shares with her readers her thought process for designing her home. She also gives her readers a tour of the farmhouse, highlighting some of the design changes she made over the years.
How Joanna Gaines designed her home when she first moved into the farmhouse
Gaines says she used a lot of display pieces for the furniture and décor of the farmhouse. She and her husband collected many of the items during the early years of their marriage. She revealed money was not abundant when they were newlyweds, so they had to make the most of what they had. This meant they couldn’t purchase a lot of new things, so they got creative with the design:
When we first moved into the farmhouse, a lot of our furniture and decor were display pieces that I pulled from our Little Shop on Bosque, or items that Chip and I had collected early in our marriage—and because time and money were all scarce, we filled the farmhouse with what we already had. But gradually, once we settled in and gave ourselves time to learn how each space could best support the way our family functions, I started to reconsider what I wanted our home to communicate to and about our family—and made decisions based on that notion.
Joanna Gaines says this is what makes design so gratifying
Gaines told her readers she made sure to include some original items she placed in her home when she and Chip first moved in. She says it was important for her to keep those pieces because they tell the story of her family. Here’s what she said about keeping old items:
You’ll notice that a few original pieces have remained on our walls or displayed on shelves—that’s because they mean a great deal to our family and will therefore always have a place in our home. When I look around, it’s those pieces that tell the story of our family, and I’ll never tire of seeing them. It is this blending of the old and new that makes interior design such gratifying and creative work.
The 1 thing Joanna Gaines keeps in mind when designing her home
Gaines says she keeps one thing in mind when planning the design for her home. She told her readers it’s important for the space to not only look good but also be functional. For her, it doesn’t make sense to have a pretty space that doesn’t work for her family’s needs:
When it comes to designing spaces in my home, it’s always a balancing act of function and style. Because we live in a farmhouse, our home will always have that foundational aesthetic—so whenever I feel like a space could use a change, I’m intentional about making choices that not only support the needs and interests of our family in that season, but that also reflect my evolving design style.
