Joanna Gaines Reveals Why She and Chip Gaines Wake Up at 4:00 a.m. Together
Joanna Gaines and Chip Gaines do practically everything together, whether they’re working on their business or raising their five children. The Fixer Upper stars revealed why they wake up so early together, and it has nothing to do with their kids or work. Here’s why the famous couple wakes up at 4:00 a.m.
Chip and Joanna Gaines said they hang out together in the middle of the night
Joanna and Chip Gaines are self-proclaimed night owls, and they often find themselves sleepless even when they aren’t anxious. Joanna told People in March 2019 that she and her husband frequently get up around 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. and have coffee together.
“I don’t know what our problem is, but we both wake up,” she said. “Chip will be up at three and I’ll hear him rustling around, so then by four a.m. we’re sitting on the couch having coffee.”
The Fixer Upper star shared that it’s not stress that keeps the couple up at night, but excitement.
“I feel like we’re in this season where we need little rest because there’s so many things we’re excited about,” Joanna said. “There have been seasons in our life where we woke up in the middle of the night because we were stressed, and we were worried, like the housing crisis. But this, is so fun.”
Chip Gaines said he needs ‘zero breaks’ from Joanna Gaines
Joanna and Chip Gaines love each other so much that they wake up in the middle of the night to spend time together. But in a July 2021 interview with E! News’ Daily Pop, Chip revealed that only one half of the famous couple needs the occasional break from the other.
He said that he and Joanna have had “quite the journey” in their nearly two decades of marriage, and they are together “24/7.” Chip enjoys spending so much time with his partner, saying, “It’s really sad and this is actually true – I need zero breaks from Jo.”
But he added that sometimes Joanna needs a little break from him. “And Jo’s like, ‘Can we just take a little break? I mean just a couple of days apart for a girls’ trip,’” Chip said.

Even though Joanna Gaines needs a little time away from Chip every once in a while, she still wakes up at 4:00 a.m. to have coffee with her husband. And Chip told Access Hollywood in July 2021 that breaking up would never be “an option” for the couple.
“Our superpower is that, Jo and I are not quitters,” Chip said. “Throwing in the towel is not something that honestly ever even comes to mind and I would say that it happened pretty early on in our relationship. We just thought that it’s interesting that divorce and leaving one another is not really an option for us.”
He continued, “So somehow that little foundation have [sic] served us well. Things have definitely been challenging, we’re not perfect, we have issues and trials and errors like anybody, but … this will never be a gossip mag that we don’t make it.”
