Joanna Gaines Shares a Christmas Video and Fans Love Her Magical Surprise for the Gaines Kids
Chip and Joanna Gaines made the Christmas holiday special for their kids, as evidenced by a short video montage Joanna shared on her Instagram account. Fans loved seeing one special surprise in the mix and many of her followers said they shared the fun tradition.
Joanna Gaines gave fans a glimpse at the Gaines family Christmas
Joanna took to Instagram on Dec. 25 to show just a peek at the calm before the Christmas storm. Gaines captioned the video “‘Twas the night before Christmas.”
Her followers could see some of the elements of their holiday decorations, with candles, a brightly lit Christmas tree decked out with silver ornaments, and garland greenery draped along the banister.
Gaines also showed a holiday Santa photo, one of the kids nestled in bed asleep, her son Crew’s tree with reindeer ornaments (she wrote about it on the Magnolia website), a collection of tiny houses on the fireplace mantle, and a fun retro TV set toy on their piano.
Finally, she panned across the dining room and some fans noticed something interesting — the doorway was covered in wrapping paper to keep her kids from seeing the living room! Joanna walked a little closer to the wide doorway to give a closer look before showing off the festive room with another big decorated Christmas tree and stockings hung with care.

Chip and Joanna’s special element of surprise was a hit with many of their fans, who loved the idea for the Gaines kids. One follower shared their own memory of gift wrap blocking their view of the Christmas tree.
“What the!! I have never seen or heard of someone else putting wrapping paper up over an entryway,” they wrote. “My parents have always done that since I was a child so we can’t see the gifts in the morning and then we all run through it and see everything at the same time. Love to see someone else does that!”
Others shared their own version of obstructing the view of presents. “It used to be a tradition in my family to hang a blanket across the doorway to the living room on Christmas morning too!” one fan noted.
