Joe Alwyn Does Not Necessarily ‘Want to Be Guarded and Private’ About Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift used to share quite a bit about her personal life online, but since she began dating Joe Alwyn in 2016 that has not been the case. The two are known for being private about their relationship. In a recent interview with ELLE, Alwyn shared that being so “guarded and private” about dating Swift is “more a response” to being in the public eye.
Why Joe Alwyn is ‘guarded and private’ about dating Taylor Swift
Alwyn is currently spending his time promoting Conversations with Friends, an upcoming series on Hulu in which he stars as Nick Conway.
During promotions for the TV series, Alwyn dating Swift has inevitably been brought up in multiple interviews. In an interview with ELLE, Alwyn admitted that being so “guarded and private” is more so because of fan culture and less because he is naturally closed off.
“It’s not really [because I] want to be guarded and private, it’s more a response to something else,” Alwyn told ELLE. “We live in a culture that is so increasingly intrusive… The more you give – and frankly, even if you don’t give it – something will be taken.”
Joe Alwyn thinks being private about his personal life is ‘a knee-jerk response’
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Alwyn expanded on his reasoning for keeping his personal life private, echoing the same sentiments he shared with ELLE.
“We live in a culture that people expect so much to be given. So that if you’re not posting all the time about what you’re doing, how you’re spending a day or how you made a breakfast, does that make you a recluse?” Alwyn told The Wall Street Journal.
The actor continued, “I’d also like to feel slightly less guarded sometimes in interviews or in whatever kind of interactions, but it’s just a knee-jerk response to the culture we live in. If you give it to them, it just opens the door.”
Taylor Swift has referenced her relationship in songs like ‘peace’
Since she started dating Alwyn, Swift has shared that she feels the need to keep her relationship as private as possible. The singer-songwriter has also discussed the difficulties of dating in the public eye.
On her 2020 album folklore, Swift released a song called “peace” that references her relationship with Alwyn. She discussed the song “peace” in an interview with Paul McCartney for Rolling Stone.
“‘Peace’ is actually more rooted in my personal life… I cannot control if there are 20 photographers outside in the bushes and what they do and if they follow our car and if they interrupt our lives. I can’t control if there’s going to be a fake weird headline about us in the news tomorrow,” Swift told McCartney about the song.
