Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s interview with Oprah Winfrey shocked royal fans and people who don’t care about the royals, alike. When Meghan claimed that the royal family refused to help her when she was struggling with mental health and that they were concerned about her son’s skin color, viewers were shocked. But there was one person who wasn’t surprised by the royal family’s supposed bad treatment of Meghan at all, and that’s Last Week Tonight host John Oliver. Oliver actually predicted most of what would happen to the Duchess of Sussex before she married into the family. But there was one thing he didn’t see coming.

John Oliver’s prediction

Since Meghan’s interview with Oprah premiered, an old clip of Oliver talking to Stephen Colbert in 2018 began going viral. While on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Oliver said that he wouldn’t be surprised if Meghan chose not to go through with her marriage to Harry.

“I would not blame [Meghan] if she pulled out of this at the last minute,” he said. “I don’t think you need to have just seen the pilot episode of The Crown to get a basic sense that she might be marrying into a family that could cause her some emotional complications.

“They’re an emotionally stunted group of fundamentally flawed people doing a very silly pseudo-job,” he continued. “That’s what she’s marrying into. So I hope she likes it. It’s going to be weird for her. I would not marry into the royal family. I’m a commoner. I would not be welcomed — especially after what I’ve just said.”

What did Meghan Markle reveal in her interview with Oprah Winfrey?

During the interview with Oprah, Meghan revealed that she struggled with her mental health after being viciously attacked in the press for months. She claimed that she went to the royals for help and wasn’t offered any.

Meghan also claimed that certain members of the royal family were concerned about how dark Archie would be when he was born.

“In those months when I was pregnant, all around this same time… we have in tandem the conversation of, he won’t be given security, he’s not gonna be given a title and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might when he’s born,” the Duchess told Oprah.

When Oprah asked who exactly was having those conversations, Meghan did not reveal any names. Later, when Harry joined the interview, he stood firm in his stance to never reveal who was concerned about Archie’s skin color.

What was John Oliver surprised about with Meghan Markle’s interview?

The day after the interview aired, Oprah went on CBS This Morning and revealed that Harry had shared more with her about the identity of the “concerned” family members.

“He did not share the identity with me,” the talk show host said. “But he wanted to make sure that I knew, and if I had an opportunity to share it, that it was not his grandmother, nor his grandfather that were part of those conversations. He did not tell me who were a part of those conversations. As you could see I tried to get that answer, on-camera and off.”

Earlier this week, Oliver appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and commented on how his prediction of Meghan’s treatment was right.

“That is kind of what I felt like, sadly, her experience was going to be going in,” he said.

But Oliver was shocked by one thing.

“The only thing that shocked me after was that Oprah, the next day, saying, ‘Harry wants to make clear it wasn’t Prince Philip being racist,'” he said. “Which made me think, ‘Really? Okay, that is actually surprising.'”
