‘John Wick 4’ Actor Scott Adkins Shares Why Donnie Yen Is so Good in the Movie
John Wick has become one of the most praised action movie franchises in recent times. The Keanu Reeves-starring original turned a lot of heads with its impressive fight choreography and absorbing universe. Each installment has worked toward topping its predecessor. As a result, each entry expands the scope and scale. John Wick 4 actor Scott Adkins recently explained why Donnie Yen was such a perfect addition.
‘John Wick 4’ adds new action stars to the franchise
The next sequel continues the trend of expanding upon this world of assassins. John Wick 4 continues to follow Reeves’ title character and sees the return of Laurence Fishburne as Bowery King, Lance Reddick as Charon, and Ian McShane as Winston. They have become staples for the franchise that action fans expect to see.
John Wick 4 also brings several fresh faces to the series. However, they’re rather familiar from other movies. Ip Man‘s Yen, The Expendables 2‘s Adkins, It‘s Bill Skarsgård, and Mortal Kombat‘s Hiroyuki Sanada join the cast. The story and character details remain unknown, but fans posted on social media to try and guess how this new cast will fit into the mythos.
Scott Adkins reveals why Donnie Yen is such a great addition
Comic Book interviewed Adkins about his high-octane action movie One Shot. John Wick 4 questions naturally came up during the interview. He explained what it was like working with Yen as an actor, but also the directing knowledge that he brought to the set.
“Well, Donnie is an amazing filmmaker himself,” Adkins said. “Of course, he’s this badass martial arts superstar. But like many of those guys to look up to — like him, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung — he’s very aware of the craft of filmmaking. He’s very aware of how to make a film.”
Adkins continued: “He’s an incredible action director in his own right. So he has his own opinions, of course, and you must listen to him because he knows what he’s talking about, [laughs] but it only helps make everything better. He’s so experienced.”
Adkins didn’t reveal very much about the John Wick 4 characters. However, he did mention his opinion of Yen’s character. Adkins knows to not leak too much ahead of any official announcements. This isn’t his first time working on an action movie franchise.
“He’s got a really cool character in this one,” Adkins said. “I shouldn’t say anything but… An extremely cool character. I think people are gonna really get a kick out of seeing what he does in the John Wick universe.”
‘John Wick 4’ officially wrapped filming
John Wick 4 is officially wrapped on filming. The movie was shot in Berlin, Paris, Japan, and New York City. However, coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic-related delays pushed filming and changed distribution plans. Reeves’ The Matrix: Resurrections filming schedule also resulted in additional delays.
John Wick 4 hits theaters on May 27, 2022. John Wick 5 is still set for release. The television series spinoff prequel The Continental is still expected for a Starz release sometime in 2022.
