John Wick 4 has an expected May 27, 2022 release date after several coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic-related delays. Now that they have officially wrapped on production, more information is available. The supposed full John Wick 4 title has been leaked. It has a special meaning that could hint at the movie’s direction.
‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’ was the first in the franchise with a subtitle
The first two installments are titled John Wick and John Wick: Chapter 2, respectively. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum was the first installment to include the additional subtitle. However, many audiences simply called it John Wick 3 upon its release. But, the subtitle holds meaning to the movie’s core intent.
“Parabellum” is the second half of the Latin phrase, “Si vis pacem, para bellum.” It roughly translates to, “If you want peace, then prepare for war.” The second half that the movie adopts in its subtitle essentially means, “prepare for war.” John certainly started a war and there isn’t any way of going back. Hagakure isn’t English and it also holds special meaning for the movie. It means “hidden by the leaves” or “hidden leaves.” The name originates from Hagakure Kikigaki, which is a practical and spiritual guide. It contains Yamamoto Tsunetomo’s series of writings. The book outlines the struggle of maintaining a warrior class outside of wartime. It also reminisces a time long before the book’s writings before the writer’s birth.
Hagakure Kikigaki was forgotten for many years. It was rediscovered as the essential samurai guide during the Pacific War. The book explores the concept of accepting death for the sake of one’s lord. Poet Yukio Mishima wrote his own 1967’s commentaries based on Hagakure Kikigaki.
‘John Wick 4: Hagakure’ emphasizes martial arts
John Wick 4: Hagakure seems to place an emphasis on its martial arts. Actor Donnie Yen is a master of a variety of martial arts, including Tai Chi, Karate, Taekwondo, Kickboxing, and Jiu-Jitsu.
