Before meeting Moss, Depp was engaged to his Edward Scissorhands co-star, Winona Ryder. The two were madly in love, and they shared common interests aplenty considering their mutual passion for literature and beat poetry.
Ryder and Depp’s attraction for all things dark and ominous made them any goth kid’s dream pair- which is why their sudden split was so devastating for the public. Depp’s tattoo, which said “Winona Forever,” had to be altered to “Wino Forever.”
Yet fortunately for the Corpse Bride actor, he was able to find comfort in the arms of a supermodel (better known to the world as Kate Moss.) The Tim Burton actor went from the salvation-army sporting bookworm to the high-fashion runway model. But how did Depp and Moss meet?
Depp and Moss met at a cafe in New York City. The model claims she “knew from the first moment” they met, that they’d end up together. Moss reveals, “I knew from the first moment we talked that we were going to be together.” And the rest was history. Their relationship involved extensive partying, hotel-trashing, and (extremely) public displays of affection. According to PEOPLE, Depp and Moss couldn’t take their “hands, lips, mouths, or legs off each other.”

Moss reveals that she had a “nervous breakdown” at the beginning stages of her career. Unfortunately, her modeling gigs had her doing photoshoots that made her incredibly uncomfortable, and the model admits she “couldn’t get out of bed for weeks.” Yet thankfully, that all changed when she met Depp, who helped her feel more secure. Moss admits that the Pirates of the Caribbean actor was the person she’d always go to for advice and that it was challenging for her to lose someone she trusted so much. She spills to Vanity Fair in a 2012 interview,
“There’s nobody that’s ever really been able to take care of me. Johnny did for a bit. I believed what he said,” Moss says. “Like if I said, ‘What do I do?’ He’d tell me. And that’s what I missed when I left. I really lost that gauge of somebody I could trust. Nightmare. Years and years of crying. Oh, the tears!”

Moss, as it turns out, wasn’t the only person who was heartbroken about the split. According to Depp, he’d “never gotten this emotional about a woman before.” He adds that the breakup was his fault. He tells Hello! Magazine, “I have been so stupid because we had so much going for our relationship. I’m the one who has to take responsibility for what happened- I was difficult to get on with, I let my work get in the way, and I didn’t give her the attention I should have.”
