Jon Batiste earned 11 Grammy nominations for the 2022 ceremony

After attending Julliard, Batiste released several original songs. He even partnered with Disney and Pixar for Soul. Additionally, this artist appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert as one of the regular musicians/the band leader, pausing to chat with Lady Gaga and Adam Driver during the talk show. 

While on Colbert’s show, Batiste reacted to his 11 Grammy nominations. As the person with the most 2022 nominations, he elaborated on what the recognition means.

“I just was sitting there by the eighth one, and I was just like… actually to myself, I was talking to God like, ‘there’s a lesson in this for me to learn,’” he began. “There’s something.” 

“It’s great, but there’s so much happening in my life right now, and this is happening, and there’s something in this that’s bigger than me and just adulation for me that I have to learn, and so I’m so grateful,” Batiste said.

As the artist with the most Grammy nominations in 2022, Batiste earned Best R&B Album and Album Of The Year nods for We Are. “Batiste: Movement 11’” received a Best Contemporary Classical Composition, while “Bigger Than Us” earned a Best Improvised Jazz Solo nomination.

Batiste’s original songs earned recognition from the award ceremony. Best Music Video and Record Of The Year nominations went to “Freedom.” “Cry” snagged Best American Roots Performance and Best American Roots Song nominations. 

Thanks to Soul and Jazz Selections: Music From And Inspired By Soul, the composer earned nominations in the Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media Best Jazz Instrumental Album categories.

“These nominations are a real affirmation of my belief that music is bigger than genre,” Batiste said in an interview with Variety. With nominations spanning several genres, the artist added that music “is about bringing people together.”

This year could also mark Batiste’s first Grammy win. (He previously earned the Academy Award for Best Original Score for his work with Disney and Pixar’s animated film, Soul. For that same project, Batiste earned the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score.)

Jon Batiste earned Grammy nominations for already-released music

The 2022 ceremony wouldn’t be the first Grammys that Batiste earned nominations. Chronology Of A Dream: Live At The Village Vanguard earned the Grammy nomination in the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. 

Meditations snagged a nod in the Best New Age Album category, while Saint James Infirmary Blues did in the Best American Roots Performance section. However, Batiste did not take home a trophy for these releases.

Batiste will perform at the 2022 Grammy Awards, taking place on April 3. Artists Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, BTS, and others are also scheduled to perform.
