Jon Batiste’s ‘We Are’ Wins 2022 Grammy Award for Album of the Year
Hot off of the heels of his now, she has several Grammy Awards. Hot off the heels of her Best Pop Vocal Album and Best New Artist wins, Olivia Rodrigo snagged the 2022 Album of the Year Grammy Award for her debut album Sour.
Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Doja Cat, and others earned Grammy nominations for Album of the Year
It’s one of the most star-studded nights in music, highlighting original songs in most genres. As one of the night’s most coveted awards, Album of the Year is given to a complete body of work, as voted on by the Academy.
The nominees for this category in 2022 included Jon Batiste for We Are, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga’s Love for Sale, Justice (Triple Chucks Deluxe) by Justin Bieber, Doja Cat’s Planet Her (Deluxe), Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever, Back of My Mind by H.E.R, Lil Nas X for Montero, Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour, Taylor Swift’s Evermore, and Donda by Kanye West.
Jon Batiste won the 2022 Album of the Year Grammy Award for ‘We Are’
As the final award of the evening, Batiste received the 2022 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. That was for his 2021 release We Are. (Batiste was also the artist with the most 2022 Grammy nominations.)
“Hey,” he shouted after receiving a standing ovation. “Wow. Thank you. You know I really I believe this to my core there is no best musician, best artist, best dancer, best actor — the creative arts are subjective.”
The artist continued, saying that music reaches people at a point in their lives when they need it the most. A song or an album has a radar and finds a person when they need it most. Lady Gaga nodded in agreement in the audience.
“I love music,” Batiste continued, saying that for him, it’s a spiritual practice. The artist said that he featured his grandfather and even his nephew in the album.
“Let’s just keep going, be you. That’s it. I love you, even if I don’t know you,” he said before wishing the audience a good night.
Previously Album of the Year winners for the Grammy Awards include Taylor Swift (‘Folklore’) and Billie Eilish ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’
Swift took home this award at the 2021 ceremony, presenting her acceptance speech alongside collaborators Joe Alwyn and Jack Antonoff. Album of the Year was the only category Swift was nominated in this year, receiving recognition for Folklore’s sister album, Evermore.
Also nominated for the 2022 award, Eilish previously took home the Album of the Year Grammy for her 2019 release, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? Eilish was only 18 years old at the time.
