Who was Alec John Such?

John Such was the original bassist hired to fill a vital role in the Bon Jovi band.

Born in 1951, John Such played in a band called The Message with former Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora. He was also a childhood friend of Bon Jovi’s drummer, Tico Torres.

Before joining Bon Jovi’s band, John Such was the manager of what was formerly known as the Jernee Mill Inn. The concert spot later became Hunka Bunka and is now called the Starland Ballroom. Seeing potential in Jon Bon Jovi, he booked his band Bon Jovi & The Wild Ones to play at the club.

After the success of Bon Jovi’s 1984 hit single “Runaway,” the band supported the single ahead of recording the group’s first self-titled album.

John Such was subsequently on board, joined by drummer Torres, guitarist Sambora, and keyboardist David Bryan. Together the original lineup would remain for ten years.

Likewise, he played on the first five albums released by the band, from their 1983 self-titled LP to 1992’s “Keep the Faith.”

However, John Such split with Bon Jovi in 1994. He later admitted being in the band “felt like work, and I didn’t want to work,” reported the Asbury Park Press in 2000.

Moreover, during Bon Jovi’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, John Such reunited with the group and gave a speech where he shared his gratitude for being in the legendary rock and roll band.

“When Jon Bon Jovi called me up and asked me to be in his band many years ago, I soon realized how serious he was and he had a vision that he wanted to bring us to, and I am too happy to have been a part of that vision,” he said during the event.
