Josh Brolin made his debut as Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a small role in Guardians of the Galaxy. He would later feature as the menacing villain in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. He also played Cable in Deadpool 2, however, this was in the Fox Marvel universe. Still, since Deadpool 2 is on the way, maybe Brolin will reprise the role.

His recent role in Dune saw him playing Gurney Halleck, the weapons expert for the house Atreides and mentor to Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet). While his role wasn’t major, he still made an impact as only Brolin can. While both Marvel movies and Dune are grand in scale, Brolin said that there are several differences in the process of making them.

The actor shares the biggest differences between making Marvel movies and ‘Dune’

In an Oct. 2021 interview with ComicBook.com, Brolin shared some of the main differences he observed between filming Marvel movies versus Dune. One of the key aspects that Brolin highlights is that everything is already known about Dune, while Marvel has to keep a lot of details secret.

“[They give you] everything,” Brolin said. “There was none of that, and by the way, they did with Marvel also, the only thing with Marvel is once in a while, I started to pick up on why do they keep changing it when we get to the set? Because they would release pages to make you think it was one thing, and then you would change it and do it, that was annoying. But with [Dune], it’s all out there, you have a book, you have source material, it’s kind of tough to hide it, even though it’s a very loyal adaptation, there’s some things that are changed, there’s some things that are ad-lib, there’s some things that are created for.

Brolin also explained that much of what they did for Dune was practical. For Marvel, a lot of the sets are digital which means that the environment is left up to one’s imagination.

“And it’s all practical, we’re on sets that you’re looking at, you’re in the middle of these massive sets, the production design was on a massive scale,” he continued. “Whereas Marvel, it’s kind of up to your imagination, both are equally fascinating and deserve a lot of focus, but very different.”

Brolin’s future in Marvel is unknown. It’s unclear if he will ever return as Cable or Thanos, but never say never. For Dune, Brolin recently confirmed that he is returning for Dune Part 2.

In Dune, the fate of his character is left undetermined, but it seems like he made it out of the war with the Harkonnens alive. Book readers will know what Gurney’s future holds, but movie audiences can only wait and see what’s next for Brolin in this series

Dune Part 2 is scheduled for release on Oct. 20, 2023.
