The Judd Apatow Movie His Daughter, Maude, Refuses to Watch (And Their Shared Favorite Film)
Famed director Judd Apatow was especially close with one star of his new film, The King of Staten Island. No, not Pete Davidson — his daughter, Maude Apatow, was also cast in the comedy. And while you may think she would know every one of him movies, it turns out there’s at least one she hasn’t seen.
Judd Apatow is known for many popular films
Judd got his start as a writer for TV in the ’90s. But his career has expanded well beyond that. In addition to series like Freaks and Geeks and Crashing, Judd has made his way into the film world as a writer, director, and producer for many hit Hollywood movies.
As of June 2020, Judd has directed eight films, including The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up. He has also written the screenplay for those titles, as well as several others.
His daughter, Maude Apatow, has acted in some of them
While working on an early movie he produced, The Cable Guy, Judd met actor Leslie Mann. They were married in 1997 and had two children, Maude and Iris Apatow. Not long after, he began to cast them all in his projects.
To date, Maude has appeared in four of her father’s films, including Funny People, This Is 40, and, of course, The King of Staten Island. She also had a recurring role in the TV show Girls, which Judd executive produced.
She refuses to watch this movie he directed
While promoting The King of Staten Island, the Apatows took the BuzzFeed father/daughter test, where they answered questions about the other. When asked what their favorite Judd Apatow movie is, the director replied, “I know what [yours] isn’t. Which is Funny People, which you’ve never seen.”
Apparently, Maude “refuses” to watch the 2009 film, in which she plays Mable, daughter of Mann’s Laura. “Why won’t you watch it?” Judd asked his daughter. “Because now it’s just become so much of a thing,” she replied. He called it “A running joke in the family,” adding that she won’t watch “because [she] knows that I find it annoying.”
Both love another film that he produced
In addition to his work writing and directing, Apatow is also known for producing many hit films. And as it turns out, his favorite movie he’s been involved with isn’t one that he helmed, but rather one that he produced. “I’ll tell you the one that makes me laugh the most,” he said, declaring the 2008 Adam McKay-directed Step Brothers his choice.
This seems to be a family favorite. “I never think of you liking anything that I’m a part of, or you’re a part of,” said Judd to Maude. While he guessed she might like another film he produced, Bridesmaids, she agreed with his pick. “I was going to say Step Brothers,” Maude replied to her dad.
