Justin Bieber Faced Backlash For Refusing a Gay Role But Critics Didn’t Know the Real Story
Justin Bieber has arguably been the most adored and hated pop singer of his time. His dance-worthy Billboard hits and good-looks have made him a soft spot for many fans, while his angry outbursts and disrespectful behaviors have caused a lot of frustrations for others. Growing up in the spotlight means his every action and response is made public — no matter how good or bad.
His reason for backing out of his 2016 movie role was no exception. In fact, it came out that Bieber backed out of his Uber Girl role because of a gay sex scene, and fans were outraged — but there is a plot twist.
Justin Bieber has had a brief acting career
Everyone knows Bieber for his pop hits like “Baby,” “Boyfriend,” and “Somebody to Love.” As well as dozens of other hits he has put out since becoming a global sensation in 2009. Discovered at the young age of 13 by RBMG Records, Bieber has been in the spotlight his entire teenage years, earning immense fame and acknowledgments early on. Like any great artist, it was just a matter of time before the “One Time” singer moved his talents over to the film industry, although it’s a significantly short one so far.
Daily Mail reports that Bieber’s movie roles have only consisted of “his own concert videos and making appearances in those of other artists, playing a prisoner in two episodes of TV drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in 2010 and 2011 [and an epic] cameo appearance in Ben Stiller’s Zoolander No. 2.” In 2016, the singer was said to have been in talks about adding another part to his small acting career.
The rumor of Justin Bieber backing out of ‘Uber Girl’
Uber Girl was said to be a coming-of-age story for millennials but never made it to the screens since talks about it circulated in 2016 at its early stages. It was supposed to be a film starring Bieber as himself (a young pop star), alongside a starry cast of big names. However, Bieber’s character in the film was supposed to be gay and have a sex scene with one of his backup dancers in the film’s original script, to which it’s being said he refused to take part.
According to The Source, film writer Pete O’ Neil said that they talked about Bieber playing himself in Uber Girl, but Bieber was concerned about a gay sex scene. “He won’t take the part unless the sex scene with him and one of the male backup dancers is taken out of the final script,” he said. In the meantime, he was looking to big-name casts like Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande for his film.
The unforeseen Hollywood plot twist
After receiving a significant amount of backlash for turning down a role because of a ‘gay sex’ scene, news came out that it was all a lie, and Bieber was a victim of falsified information as a means of promotion.
According to NME, it was all made up, and Bieber didn’t actually have anything to do with the film. In fact, a representative of Bieber spoke out to Gossip Cop and reportedly said, “there’s no truth to the story … he’s not even involved in the movie, as talks ‘never happened.'”
This wasn’t the first time Bieber’s name was used to gain some attention in Hollywood, and it most likely won’t be the last either. Throwing Justin Bieber’s name out — whether good or bad — can get writers and producers enough attention to get their projects in the center of the conversation. Although that is exactly what happened, it seems it wasn’t enough to get the ‘alleged’ film moving forward.
