In 2022, Justin Bieber earned an impressive eight Grammy Award nominations. But despite his record-breaking career, his history with music’s top awards show hasn’t been very successful. He’s landed quite a few nominations, but he hasn’t taken home many statues. On top of that, Bieber’s never won a Grammy for any of his pop music — the music that made him famous.

This year’s awards correct an omission that Bieber made a stink about. But it isn’t the snub of his pop music.

Forbes reports in 2022, Justin Bieber tied for second place with two other musicians for the most Grammy nominations. He has the same number as H.E.R. and Doja Cat with eight nods. The only artist with more is John Batiste, who has a record-matching 11 nominations.

Bieber’s eight nominations include three of the four biggest awards: Album of the Year for Justice (Triple Chucks Deluxe), Record of the Year, and Song of the Year, both for “Peaches.” This isn’t the first time he’s been up for awards in these three categories, and he also was nominated for Best New Artist years ago, rounding out all of the big four awards. But he’s never taking home any of these statues.

This year, he’s also in the running for Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Music Video, and Best R&B Performance. Some industry insiders believe that his best chance of winning is for Best R&B Performance, for “Peaches.”

A history of plenty of nominations, few awards

Bieber became famous for his music more than a decade ago. Since then, he’s garnered 22 Grammy nominations. However, he’s only managed to take home two awards so far, which is a relatively low number for an artist as popular as he is. What’s more, even though Bieber rose to fame as a pop star, neither of his Grammys are for pop music.

In 2016, he won Best Dance/Electronic Recording for “Where Are Ü Now” with Jack Ü. In the 2021 Grammy Awards, he won Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “10,000 Hours” with Dan+Shay.

But though many people find it surprising that Bieber hasn’t won any Grammys for pop music, that doesn’t seem to be the category he’s most frustrated by.

An overdue nomination for R&B

Last year’s Grammy nominations didn’t make Bieber happy. His album Changes was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album. But Bieber thought that the Recording Academy put it in the wrong category.

“I am very meticulous and intentional about my music,” Bieber wrote in an Instagram post. “With that being said I set out to make an R&B album. Changes was and is an R&B album. It is not being acknowledged as an R&B album which is very strange to me.”

He followed that up by clarifying that he loves pop music, but “it just wasn’t what I set out to make this time around.”

Although some are surprised Bieber hasn’t won a Grammy yet for pop music, it seems that he has his eye on the R&B category. Perhaps this year, “Peaches” will help him bring home the statue he’s hoping for.
