Kacey Musgraves Says Dating After Her Divorce Was ‘Shocking’ and ‘Disappointing’
Musician Kacey Musgraves had a three-year marriage to her ex-husband, Ruston Kelly. However, the couple divorced last year, and Musgraves suddenly found herself back on the dating scene. She recently shared what it was like to date as a divorced woman in her 30s.
Why did Kacey Musgraves and her ex-husband divorce?
Musgraves and Kelly started dating in mid-2016. Then, they got married in October 2017. Unfortunately, the marriage broke down in 2020, which led Musgraves and Kelly to file for divorce.
In an interview with Elle, Musgraves shared that the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic made her and Kelly see how incompatible they were. She said, “I could have coasted for another couple of years, just not paying attention to my feelings or not really dealing with some things.”
Ultimately, she and Kelly felt they were too different to be together.
“It’s nothing more than that,” she told Rolling Stone. “It’s two people who love each other so much, but for so many reasons, it just didn’t work. I mean, seasons change. Our season changed.”
Kacey Musgraves opens up about what it’s like to date after her divorce
In a recent interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Musgraves opened up about dating life after her divorce. As Musgraves shared, she found some things hard to get used to.
“It was kind of my first few steps into exploring being a single 30-something-year-old person, after a marriage and… Nothing for nothing,” she said, according to People. “After a huge point in my career, more notoriety, it was a really naked place.”
Musgraves was especially taken aback by the way some people approach dating.
“We live in this hookup culture, and I’m for it,” she said. “I’m for whatever it makes you feel happy, as long as it’s safe, doesn’t hurt other people, fine. But I’ve just never experienced that, the dating app culture and all that. I mean, I’m not going to. But, what I’m saying is, it was just shocking. It was a little shocking. It was surprising. And it made me just think that we all have flaws.”
Who is Kacey Musgraves dating now?
In June 2021, Musgraves started being linked to poet Cole Schafer. She confirmed their romance in August during an interview with The New York Times.
“He did not know who I was, which I loved,” she shared. Musgraves also revealed she and Schafer met when they first locked eyes at a restaurant.
For Musgraves, her new relationship likely gets the benefits of her self-awareness. She told Lowe that, after her divorce, she had been trying to understand herself better so that she could see patterns that have played out in her love life.
“It’s an opportunity to dig into yourself to learn more about why you do the things that you do, why you choose the kind of people that you do,” she said. “I think we’re all just, in a sense, reenacting the things that we’ve learned through our childhoods, in our adult relationships. It’s worth examining.”
