Kaley Cuoco Is Nominated for an Emmy Award for ‘the Flight Attendant’ She Was Never Nominated for ‘the Big Bang Theory’

Kaley Cuoco's Emmy nomination is kind of a big deal. Not only is the former 'The Big Bang Theory' star up for his first individual Emmy, but it's for a show she not only found but developed and starred in. Cuoco toiled away on 'The Big Bang Theory' for years and never got individual recognition, but that's true for most of her castmates, too.

Kaley Cuoco’s Emmy nomination for The Flight Attendant is a pretty big deal. Cuoco has spoken openly about how much the nomination means to her. Some fans aren’t entirely sure why the nod is so incredibly meaningful, though. After all, Cuoco spent more than a decade on one of the most successful shows in history. Believe it or not, the actor who spent years playing Penny on The Big Bang Theory never actually received an individual Emmy nomination for her efforts. The 73rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will mark the first time she could take home a trophy.

Kaley Cuoco is a ‘first-timer’ at the Emmy Awards after her nomination for ‘The Flight Attendant’

Cuoco is officially a favorite to take home top honors for The Flight Attendant. Shortly after being nominated by the Television Academy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Cuoco took to Instagram to show her gratitude. She noted that she is a “first-timer” when it comes to Emmy nominations.

Believe it or not, Cuoco was never recognized by the Television Academy for her role in The Big Bang Theory. Cuoco’s nomination isn’t the only one for the fledgling series, either. The Flight Attendant is nominated for nine Emmy Awards. Aside from Cuoco’s nomination, the Television Academy has recognized Rosie Perez for her work with a nomination in the supporting actress category. The Television Academy also nominated the show in the Outstanding Comedy Series category. The writing team and camera team have also gotten nods.

Kaley Cuoco found The Flight Attendant while searching Amazon

After The Big Bang Theory ended, Cuoco found herself without a major job to focus on. She turned to Amazon to find some reading material and found her next big acting project. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Cuoco revealed that she saw the book cover for The Flight Attendant on Amazon and immediately called her lawyer to option the rights. She was in such a haste to grab the project that she hadn’t even read the book when negotiations began.

It all worked out in the end. Cuoco’s team purchased the rights, and development began quickly. While it was a massive departure from her previous role, Cuoco sunk into it. Fans and critics have raved about her portrayal of Cassandra Bowden, noting that Cuoco’s acting chops appear to be flourishing in the darker and grittier role.

Which actors earned Emmy wins for ‘The Big Bang Theory’?

The Television Academy frequently snubbed Cuoco during her time on The Big Bang Theory, but not everyone from the series got the cold shoulder. During its 12-season run, The Big Bang Theory carried home 10 statues in 55 nominations. Admittedly, most of those nominations and wins weren’t for individual achievements in acting, though.

Jim Parsons, the actor who portrayed Sheldon Cooper on the hit series, is the only main cast member to take home an individual win. During his time on the show, he won the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series four times. His last win came in 2014. Johnny Galecki and Mayim Bialik were the only other main castmember to receive nominations. Galecki earned one nomination for his portrayal of Leonard Hofstadter. The Television academy nominated Bialik four times in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category for her role as Amy Farrah Fowler, Sheldon’s main love interest.

Supporting actors and guest actors faired a bit better. Christine Baranski received four nominations, and Bob Newhart took home an Emmy Award for his guest appearance on The Big Bang Theory. Baranski appeared in a supporting role as Dr. Beverly Hofstadter, Leonard’s mother. Newhart portrayed Professor Proton.
