Kanye West and Jay-Z were friends for years, but West once aired his grievances with the other rapper. During a concert in his Life of Pablo tour, West talked about his relationship with Jay-Z and Beyoncé. He insinuated that Jay-Z had ways of making him disappear if he upset him.

Kanye West once asked Jay-Z not to come after him

During a concert, West once railed against Jay-Z and Beyoncé for not checking up on him after Kim Kardashian was robbed in Paris.

“Don’t call me, after the robbery, and say, ‘How you feelin’?’” he said, per Billboard. “You wanna know how I’m feelin’? Come by the house.”

In another mid-concert rant, West made two requests of Jay-Z: to call him, and to not harm him.

“I’ve been sent here to give y’all my truth even at the risk of my own life, my own success, my own career,” he said. “Jay Z — call me, bruh. You still ain’t called me. Jay Z, I know you got killers. Please don’t send them at my head. Please call me. Talk to me like a man.”

Jay-Z said his relationship with Kanye West is complicated

Jay-Z said he viewed West as a brother, but acknowledged that they had a complicated relationship.

“I [talked to] Kanye the other day, just to tell him, like, he’s my brother,” he told The New York Times Style Magazine in 2017, adding, “I love Kanye. I do. It’s a complicated relationship with us.”

He said there had also always been a rivalry between them.

“Kanye came into this business on my label. So I’ve always been like his big brother. And we’re both entertainers. It’s always been like a little underlying competition with your big brother. And we both love and respect each other’s art, too. So it’s like, we both — everyone wants to be the greatest in the world. You know what I’m saying? And then there’s like a lot of other factors that play in it. But it’s gonna, we gonna always be good.

He said he has always thought they would overcome their differences

Though Jay-Z acknowledged the challenges in his relationship with West, he said he didn’t think their relationship would suffer permanent damage. He believes they just needed to have an honest conversation.

“In the long relationship, you know, hopefully when we’re 89 we look at this six months or whatever time and we laugh at that. You know what I’m saying?” he said. “There’s gonna be complications in the relationship that we have to get through. And the only way to get through that is we sit down and have a dialogue and say, ‘These are the things that I’m uncomfortable with. These are the things that are unacceptable to me. This is what I feel.’”

He added that he understood why West may have been frustrated with him.

“I’m sure he feels that I’ve done things to him as well,” he said. “You know what I’m saying? These are — I’m not a perfect human being by no stretch.”
