Raising 14 kids isn’t cheap. Karen and Deon Dericco, the stars of TLC’s Doubling Down With the Derricos, spend as much as $3,500 per month on groceries and can drop $1,400 on clothes during a single trip to Kohl’s. So perhaps it’s no surprise that they’ve run into financial trouble in the past.

Several years before Karen and her then-husband Deon became reality stars, Karen filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy, according to a new report from In Touch

In her 2018 filing, Karen declared that she had assets totaling $12,519 and liabilities totaling $47,567. She also owed $27,000 in student loans. Her monthly income was $2,480 and her expenses were $2,560, with a total income for 2017 of $39,096. At the time, she was working as a teller at Bank of America.

Karen filed for bankruptcy not long after she gave birth to triplet sons Diez, Dior, and Carter. (Carter died shortly after birth.) Eventually, her case was converted to Chapter 7, with her debt discharged in 2019.

Deon Derrico was charged with fraud in 2014

Karen’s bankruptcy filing is just one piece of the Derrico family’s complicated financial picture.

The Doubling Down With the Derricos stars have actually filed for bankruptcy multiple times, according to the U.S. Sun. Deon filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy three times between 2011 and 2015, though each time, he later requested the case be dismissed. Karen filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy in 2016, but the case was later dismissed after she failed to comply with various requirements.

In 2014, Deon was charged with real estate fraud. Prosecutors accused him of forging homeowners’ signatures on deeds, with the goal of obtaining control of abandoned homes and renting them out for a profit, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. He was acquitted of most of the charges in 2018, while the other charges were dropped.

The couple was sued in 2021 for failing to pay back student loans. They’ve also battled foreclosure and were involved in a welfare fraud case.

In June 2024, Karen and Deon divorced. They agreed to share custody of their 13 minor children. Karen will cover the children’s medical insurance premiums, while Deon is required to pay $1,116 per month in child support.

The Doubling Down With the Derricos Season 5 finale airs Tuesday, July 2 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on TLC. Episodes also stream on Max.
