Karrueche Tran Says Breakup With Victor Cruz Forced Her to Focus on Her Career
Karrueche Tran is no longer the shy young girl fans first met when she was dating Chris Brown. The Claws star is now an in-demand award-winning actor and influencer and has no plans on slowing down. One of the things Tran attributes to her success is her decision to remain single in the wake of her recent breakup with her longtime boyfriend Victor Cruz. She says she’s in a discovery phase and enjoying the process.
Karruche Tran says she decided to be single to focus on work and herself
Tran has been in two high-profile relationships, with her latest being with Cruz. Despite her accomplishments outside of her romantic life, she realizes people associate her with who she’s dating. “I’m a relationship girl so it’s hard to keep it private,” she told Tamron Hall in a recent interview. “I feel like with social media, it’s always about gossip and drama and who you’re dating and who you’re with and I just wanted to really focus on my career and myself.”
She says being single has allowed her to rediscover things in unimaginable ways, both professionally and personally. Through therapy, she’s learned she’s in a “glow up phase.”

“I’ve been talking to my therapist like, ‘What is going on with me? I want to be single and I want to focus on me. I’m having these thoughts and these feelings.’ And she’s like, ‘You’re stepping into your power.’ I love that!” Tran said with a smile.
While she hasn’t spoken at length about her breakup with Cruz, it’s clear she’s in a great space. She now has her own jewelry line, Kae by Karruechee, and is considered a fashion powerhouse of sorts. Before the fame, Tran worked as a stylist at Nordstrom.
Her decision paid off and she’s a history-making Emmy-winning actor
After her breakup with singer Chris Brown, Tran began thinking of what she wanted to do with her career. She landed a small part in Fright Night Files and had just one line. The experience made her realize that acting was her passion and she began taking private acting classes.

Though she landed a slew of lead roles, they were in low-budget projects. Her agents considered dropping her and she even considered quitting. But she says she stayed true to her dream and opted to go full force into acting, beginning by taking group classes and improv classes to get out of her comfort zone. “That’s when I landed Claws,” she told Hall. Tran starred on the TNT drama series alongside Neicy Nash for four successful seasons.
Flash forward to now, and Tran is now a Primetime and Daytime Emmy Award winner. “To win the Emmy itself [was crazy],” she recalled to Hall. “I downplayed it at first because I didn’t think I was going to win and then I won and I was like, ‘Oh my God,’ and I was crying and I was emotional. And then to find out that I am the first Asian American actress in the daytime and primetime Emmys [to win in my category] is like crazy. I made history.”
