Kate Middleton has taken some much-needed time away from the spotlight this year. In early March, the Princess of Wales announced that she had been diagnosed with cancer and would be spending more time away from the spotlight. The princess’ last public appearance prior to her announcement was in December 2023.

In 2024, Kate has made two official public appearances: Trooping the Colour and Wimbledon. Now, she’s made another surprise appearance while vacationing in Scotland, which signals a “positive step” in her recovery.

Kate Middleton was spotted in Scotland with Prince William

The Princess of Wales has kept a low profile this year amid chemotherapy and recovery. But she has been getting out and about slightly more. Earlier in the year, Kate wasn’t even spotted leaving her home, which led people to question her health status. But after making a handful of appearances this year, people have become excited that she seems to be doing better.

While vacationing at Balmoral in Scotland in August, Kate was spotted on her way to church, alongside Prince William. According to The Independent, the princess was photographed in a car alongside William near the family’s estate.

“The fact that Kate is well enough to travel to Scotland and enjoy a holiday at Balmoral is a sure sign she is on the mend and a very positive step,” royal author Phil Dampier told Fabulous Magazine, per The Independent.

Kate has been spending more time with her kids and husband this year, and it’s possible that the diagnosis might permanently shift her role in the royal family.

Kate Middleton has not mentioned a full return to royal duties

When Kate revealed her diagnosis, it was assumed that she would eventually make a full royal return. However, nothing has been announced, even as autumn approaches. But it’s possible that Kate’s health battle could permanently alter her role in the royal family. The princess has always valued family time, and now, she might focus even more heavily on raising her kids and enjoying the lack of pomp and circumstance surrounding her every move.

Although Kate will almost certainly make a royal return, it’s possible she will create a new type of schedule that allows her to enjoy a more private life. Still, the public is excited for her to potentially come back either at the end of 2024 or in 2025, so it’s likely that she will get on some sort of set schedule. For now, though, she continues to enjoy family time up in Scotland.
