Kate Middleton has had a year she likely never expected. The Princess of Wales revealed in March 2024 that she had been diagnosed with cancer, about three months after she first disappeared from the spotlight. Since then, she has made very limited public appearances, and prior to revealing her diagnosis, some thought she had given up royal life for good.

Of course, we now know that Kate is still anticipating taking on the role of queen one day, but one royal expert claims that sources say the princess “might never go back” to the way her royal life once was.

Kate Middleton has been ‘fundamentally’ changed by her cancer diagnosis

The public saw Kate Middleton at Christmas last December, and everything seemed fine. Then, she disappeared for what her team referred to as abdominal surgery. But after three months away from the spotlight, the rumor mill forced Kate to make a video statement revealing that she had been diagnosed with cancer. She took roughly three more months away before appearing at King Charles’ Trooping the Colour event in June. Since then, Kate has made one more public appearance at Wimbledon.

Although the princess has returned to the spotlight, journalist Rob Shuter says sources suggest that Kate “might never” return to the royal life she lived previously because she has been “changed” by this diagnosis.

“I’m told that this has changed her fundamentally; she might never go back to being the royal that she was before,” Shuter told Rosanna Scotto on Good Day New York. “She’s realized that she wants to spend time with her kids. It sounds like a dream to be a princess, but it’s actually quite a hard, tedious job.”

Kate and Prince William are raising three children: Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.

Kate Middleton still plans to be queen

Although Kate might look at life through a slightly different lens now, the Princess of Wales is still very much planning to become queen. “Let’s be clear,” Shuter said, “she’s not giving it up; she’s not leaving the family.”

Kate has always remained focused on raising her children and balancing royal life, but now, she might put her family further up on her priority list than her role as future queen. William and Kate have always tried to maintain a normal life for their children; they keep them out of the spotlight as much as possible unless they’re attending major royal events or something fun like a sporting event. Charlotte accompanied Kate to Wimbledon, but that was the first time Charlotte had been seen since Trooping the Colour. The Wales family will continue to make public appearances, but it’s possible that Kate will limit her in-person appearances so that she travels less and is generally home with her kids more often.
