Living life under a microscope is no easy task. Though members of the British royal family have a ton of royal privileges, a lack of privacy and having to be constantly “on” can most certainly be exhausting. Still, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William have seemingly mastered the art of royal living.

While the Duke of Cambridge has been in the royal fold for his entire life, Kate has had nearly 20 years to adjust to the royal spotlight. Following Megxit, the pair have stepped up to become the main faces of the royal family. As a result, they’ve had to lean on one another.

The pair have been weathering various storms since they began dating, but now with nearly 10 years of marriage under their belt and three children, they’ve become a force to be reckoned with. They also have a strict rule for their marriage that helps keep their bond strong.

Inside Kate Middleton and Prince William’s traditional marriage

The Cambridges met during their first year at St. Andrew’s University. They were almost immediately smitten with one another and dated for nearly 10 years until they tied the knot in April 2011. The duke has said he waited so long to propose to make sure that Kate had time to adjust to royal life and to bail if she wanted to.

The royal pair have modeled their union after Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II — leaning into royal traditions with a bit of 21st-century flair.

“They have different roles, but they come together as a team,” a royal insider explained to People. “They are a great double act. People make much of William giving the big speeches, but Kate is there too, asking questions of presidents and their wives. These things are easier when they are side-by-side. They look after each other but in different ways. Some people might say it’s an old-fashioned marriage, but it seems to work.”

Prince William and Kate Middleton are closer than ever

Though Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s exit from the royal family was shocking to everyone, it only drove the Cambridges closer. From rare displays of PDA to more open dialogue with royal fans, the pair are clearly on the same wavelength. A source told US Weekly,

The Cambridges are busier than ever since Harry and Meghan left the U.K. You’d think their hectic schedule would put strain on the marriage, but it’s actually brought them closer together. Working as a team and supporting each other is essential at a time like this, and that’s exactly what they’re doing.

The Cambridges have dealt with a handful of “scandals” in the royal life, including private leaked photos of the duchess and rumors that the prince had carried on an affair with their neighbor, Rose Hanbury. However, one thing that keeps them balanced is their rule to never got to bed angry.

A source told The Sun that “shouting is absolutely ‘off-limits'” for everyone in the Cambridge household, kids and adults included. Also, Kate and Prince William have a strict rule against going to bed angry. This means that any issues or disagreements that they have must be discussed and not carried into the next day.
