Kate Winslet Once Flashed Leonardo Dicaprio While Shooting ‘Titanic’
Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio became like siblings while filming Titanic. They remain just as close to this day and continue to be one of the most beloved celebrity friendships in Hollywood. Yet before getting to be as close as they are now, they were practically strangers on the first day of shooting.
And believe it or not, the first scene that they ever had to shoot involved Winslet stripping down naked to be drawn like one of Jack’s “French girls.” While most people would find this incredibly awkward to shoot, Winslet knew just how to break the ice with DiCaprio… by flashing him!
Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio became best friends on set
While Jack and Rose are one of the steamiest couples in cinema, DiCaprio and Winslet are nothing like their on-screen characters. That is, they have no romantic interest in each other.
Once the cameras stopped rolling, their starry-eyed looks melted away, and they became a lot more buddy-buddy with one another. The actors were continually pranking each other on set, according to Rolling Stone. It even got to the point where DiCaprio seemed to make a career out of trying to gross out Kate Winslet.
“Grossing Kate out was purely Leo’s job,” says Billy Zane, who plays Winslet’s stuffy fiance in Titanic. “He got really good at it. If he wasn’t rolling back his eyelids, he was making objets d’art out of bodily fluids.”
But before becoming the best of friends, DiCaprio and Winslet barely knew each other while shooting their first scene. To make matters more awkward, Winslet had to strip naked right in front of her co-star.
But fortunately, the red-haired starlet knew the perfect way to break the ice.
Kate Winslet flashed Leonardo DiCaprio before filming their first scene
According to James Cameron’s Titanic (the official BTS book,) the first scene that the cast and crew ever shot involved the now-famous nude drawing sequence.
“I was naked in front of Leo on the first day of shooting,” says Winslet in the book.
“She had no shame with it,” says DiCaprio. “She wanted to break the ice a little beforehand, so she flashed me. I wasn’t prepared for that, so she had one up on me. I was pretty comfortable after that.”
The stars of ‘Titanic’ are even closer now than ever before
Twenty-four years later, DiCaprio and Winslet are practically family. Not only has Winslet called her Titanic co-star her “closest friend in the world,” but DiCaprio also gave Winslet a friendship ring in recent years to prove his devotion to her.
But it doesn’t stop there. Winslet shamelessly confessed that she and DiCaprio still quote Titanic lines to each other, proving that our hearts will go on.
She revealed to Glamour,
“We found ourselves saying to each other, ‘Can you imagine if the world really knew the stupid things we say?’ I’m not going to tell you what we actually talk about, but yeah, we’re very, very close, and sometimes we do quote the odd Titanic line back and forth to each other because only we can, and we find it really funny.”
