Former Today Show and CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric is still delivering the news despite not being on the small screen each day. A daily fixture on the NBC morning show from 1991 to 2006, then venturing to CBS to be the first female heading the evening news on her own, Couric is now focused on her media company which she created with husband John Molner in 2015.

Losing her first husband, Jay Monahan, to colon cancer in 1998, Couric describes meeting Molner and finding love after such a tremendous loss.

Couric pays tribute to her late husband

Since Monahan’s death in 1998, Couric has been tirelessly advocating for more awareness on colon cancer and the importance of receiving colonoscopy screenings for early detection. The former Today star will often mark special dates she shared with Monahan on social media, such as their wedding anniversary.

“Dear Jay…It’s June 10th 2019 and today would have been our 30th anniversary,” she posted in June alongside a photo of their nuptials, referencing their two daughters Ellie, 28, and Carrie, 24. “I hope you would be proud of the way I’ve lived my life and know you’d be proud of your girls who have grown into incredible young women.”

Couric also mentioned her current husband in the post and how she still values her late husband’s opinion. “I think you would like @johnmolner who honors your memory and knows there is room in my heart for you both.❤️” she wrote. “With love, me. PS I’m glad they didn’t let you escape in that last photo!”

In her trademark humor, Couric added a comment regarding her wedding attire. “And sorry for the pouffy hat.. I was trying to look ‘jaunty,’” she joked.

Molner had her ‘at hello’

In 2012, Couric decided she was ready to embark on the dating world after a previous relationship had ended. “I asked a friend of mine, Molly, whose husband is a trauma surgeon, if her husband knew any other doctors because I thought I’d like to go out with a doctor,” she recalled, according to People. “And so she thought about it and she said, ‘We don’t really know a doctor, but we do know this banker named John Molner.’ And I said, ‘Does he have a pulse?’”

Though it took some time for the banker to call Couric, he eventually made his move and instantly won the journalist over. “He finally asked me out, we met at a restaurant and what can I say?” she revealed. “He had me at hello.”

Molner, who has two children from a previous marriage, didn’t wait too long to make things permanent with the former CBS Evening News anchor. Whisking Couric to a beach in East Hampton, Molner planned on popping the question in the romantic setting. Despite the ambiance, Couric was clueless as to his intentions.

“He said that there was a reason he’d brought me there to the beach, and that he loved me and was committed to me, and I said, ‘Yeah, I know that, you didn’t have to bring me here to tell me that,’” she remembered, according to People. “Finally he said, ‘Couric, I’m trying to propose to you,’ and I was stunned.”

Though a flummoxed Couric took some time to respond after Molner got on one knee and presented her with a diamond engagement ring, she eventually gave him an affirmative answer. “It took me a while to say yes, because I was so confused!” she explained. “It took a long time for my brain to process what was going on.”

Couric is a fan of marriage

The couple married in 2014, and Couric couldn’t be happier on their wedded status and her groom.

“It took me a long time [to marry again], because I loved being married and I love being married now,” the news woman told People in 2018. “And I’m not a solitary person. I like company. And John is so funny. He’s just got this incredibly dry and wry sense of humor, and he doesn’t take himself too seriously. And he’s just fun to be around.”

While Couric admits that they have the typical spats that most couples do, she truly enjoys their coupledom. “Sometimes we get angry at each other,” she said. “Sometimes I feel like he can be tough and I’m sure he thinks I’m insane. But for the most part, he’s really good company, you know? … And I can totally be myself with him, sometimes maybe to a fault. I just love being married.”

Fans of Couric are thrilled to see her find happiness again!
