Katy Perry Revealed Why Russell Brand Was Not in Her ‘Part of Me’ Documentary
In 2012, Katy Perry released a documentary about her Part of Me tour that also captured the dissolution of her marriage with Russell Brand. Even before Brand informed Perry he wanted a divorce, he was notably absent from the footage. Perry said this wasn’t intentional. She saw him so infrequently that there was no footage of him.

When Perry and Brand were together, her job took her away from him for weeks at a time. In Katy Perry: Part of Me, she mentioned that she wanted him to visit her on tour, but he wouldn’t.
“I mean, I have to claim my own responsibility in things,” she told Vogue in 2013, after her divorce. “I do admit that I was on the road a lot. Although I invited him time and time again, and I tried to come home as much as I possibly could. You saw that in the movie.”
She acknowledged that Brand was missing from the film, but she said that wasn’t intentional. They hadn’t cut him out after the divorce, he was just never around.
“That wasn’t edited to leave footage out,” she said, adding, “There wasn’t any footage of him.”

Katy Perry: Part of Me captured the moment that Perry reacted to a text message from Brand telling her he wanted a divorce. This was backstage at one of her shows; she had to collect herself and get in front of the audience soon after. In 2013, Perry said this was the last she had heard from him.
“He’s a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him,” she said. “Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011.”
Perry believes her career and ambitions became a problem for Brand.
“At first when I met him he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they’re like, I can’t handle the equalness,” she said. “He didn’t like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting. I felt a lot of responsibility for it ending, but then I found out the real truth, which I can’t necessarily disclose because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day. I let go and I was like: This isn’t because of me; this is beyond me. So I have moved on from that.”
She began a relationship with John Mayer after her divorce
Not long after her marriage to Brand ended, Perry entered into a relationship with John Mayer. The pair dated on and off until 2015. She denied that he was a rebound for her.
“No, I was madly in love with him. I still am madly in love with him,” she said, adding, “All I can say about that relationship is that he’s got a beautiful mind. Beautiful mind, tortured soul. I do have to figure out why I am attracted to these broken birds.”
