Keanu Reeves Played Winona Ryder’s Fiancé in ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’ But Fell for Someone Else During Filming

It’s not difficult to imagine how on-screen movie couples turn into real-life relationships. After all, making a movie is a long and involved process. And when you work that closely with so many attractive and talented people, sparks are likely to fly eventually. Such, many fans assume, was the case with Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Over the years, Reeves and Ryder have worked on several movies together. Their long-standing friendship and clear affection for each other has often led fans to wonder. Yet, despite the fact that Reeves and Ryder might be married, there’s little to indicate they ever really dated.

Instead, the duo — as is the case with Reeves and Sandra Bullock — have moved past romance into just being very close friends. Reeves and Ryder last shared the screen in 2018’s Destination Wedding. When they first worked together, Reeves found love during filming but not with his co-star.

But Keanu Reeves fell for someone else on ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’

Reeves and Ryder played on-screen lovers in Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 1992. Ultimately, that movie became known for both Reeves’ notorious accent and Ryder’s difficulty working with Gary Oldman. Yet, according to Entertainment Tonight, filming the movie also led to a romance between Reeves and director Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter.

At that point, Sofia Coppola was mostly known for her disappointing performance in her father’s The Godfather Part III. She would eventually begin directing herself with 1999’s The Virgin Suicides. Her relationship with Reeves was short-lived though, as they reportedly broke up the same year Bram Stoker’s Dracula hit theaters.

Reeves and Coppola both went on to far greater success. He starred in hit movie series like The Matrix and John Wick. And she’s directed critically acclaimed films like Lost in Translation and The Beguiled. Both are also in much better space as far as their love lives are concerned.

While Coppola’s marriage to Spike Jonze ended in 2003, she married musician Thomas Mars in 2011. The couple has two daughters. Although he tends to keep his personal life private, Reeves went public with his relationship with artist Alexandra Grant in 2019.
