Kelly Bishop Doesn’t Agree With Emily Gilmore Regarding Lorelai’s Love Life
Emily Gilmore was never a fan of Luke Danes. She even broke Luke and Lorelai Gilmore up in season 5 of Gilmore Girls. She wasn’t exceptionally comfortable with them as a couple nearly a decade later when fans reconnected with the Gilmores in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. Kelly Bishop, the actor who portrayed Emily Gilmore, doesn’t share the disdain. Bishop set the record straight on her feelings about Luke and Lorelai in her memoir, The Third Gilmore Girl.
Kelly Bishop agrees that Luke and Lorelai were the endgame couple of ‘Gilmore Girls’
Kelly Bishop’s character, Emily Gilmore, insisted she knew what was best for Lorelai Gilmore. She was sure that was not Luke Danes, despite predicting the relationship in season 1 of Gilmore Girls. In fact, the character despised the pairing so much that she enlisted Christopher Hayden to help end the relationship. Emily long suggested Lorelai and Christopher belonged together, partially because they shared a child but also because of Chris’ “breeding.” Emily was obviously wrong. Chris and Lorelai’s short-lived marriage ended in disaster. Still Emily was adamant that Luke was not suitable for her daughter.
Despite her character’s strong feelings, Kelly Bishop insists she was always Team Luke. In her memoir, The Third Gilmore Girl, Bishop wrote that she loved watching Luke and Lorelai together because he genuinely “got her.” She argued that he accepted Lorelai as the fun-loving but particular woman she was and loved her for it. Watching him pine for her was lovely. Still, seeing him finally get the girl brought the couple’s storyline full circle.
Kelly Bishop shared her thoughts on Rory Gilmore’s love life, too
Bishop’s opinions differ from her famed character’s thoughts regarding Luke and Lorelai, but she’s on Emily’s side when it comes to Rory Gilmore’s love life. In the memoir, Kelly Bishop admits that she is decidedly on team Logan Huntzberger.
Logan Huntzberger and Rory Gilmore dated from season 5 until the show’s final moments, when Rory turned down his marriage proposal. While Lorelai was never sold on Logan, Emily Gilmore was elated that Rory had hooked up with a man from her grandparents’ social circle. Kelly Bishop was pleased with the pairing, too. Bishop is confident that Logan is Rory’s forever love. She wrote that both the character and the actor carried themselves like true gentlemen.
While the relationship was Rory’s most serious and longest-lasting, fans are still divided on whether the heir to the Huntzberger fortune was right for her. Most Gilmore Girls fans fall into one of two camps regarding Rory’s love interests. They are either Team Logan or Team Jess. Dean Forrester, Rory’s first boyfriend, has far fewer fans.
