The original American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson has been beloved since she first stepped onto the national stage back in 2002. With hits like “Since You’ve Been Gone” and “Because Of You” her soulful sound has held our attention long-past the popularity of the once-beloved reality competition series.

Though she’s been in the limelight for nearly 20 years, Clarkson has never been involved in any type of scandal or drama. Therefore, when the songstress filed for divorce from her husband, Brandon Blackstock after nearly seven years of marriage fans were stunned.

It appears that Clarkson made the decision after quarantining for several months with her family in Montana. Unfortunately, it appears that the “I Dare You” singer felt like she had no choice.

Inside Kelly Clarkson and Brand Blackstock’s marriage

Though Clarkson and Blackstock have known each other since 2004, the pair did not begin dating until 2012. In fact, the singer remembered the first night they got flirty.  “Right when I got those bangs was right when I started dating my husband,” she told E! News. “I remember that because my Super Bowl performance, that was, like, our first time we started flirting. And I was like, ‘I’m so into you, make out with me!’”

The pair tied the knot in 2013 at Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennessee.

Quaratine was detrimental to Kelly Clarkson’s marriage

Like many people, Clarkson and Blackstock spent copious amounts of time as a family when the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic swept the globe. Unfortunately, since their marriage was already a bit strained, isolation did not help.

“Kelly and Brandon had been having problems for several months and were making a conscious effort to work things out,” a source told Entertainment Tonight. “They both hoped quarantining away from L.A. in Montana would help them work things out in their marriage, but instead the change in environment was actually detrimental.”

Time away from work helped The Voice coach realize what she needed to do. “The constant time together seemed to make an already challenging situation worse,” the source added. “It definitely helped to keep her mind off things, but this recent downtime gave her the time she needed to think about her life and her marriage.”

Kelly Clarkson’s marriage hasn’t been working for awhile

Sometimes spouses who work together thrive. Unfortunately, this was not the case for Clarkson and her soon-to-be ex-husband. “Kelly and Brandon work together non-stop and that became a contention in their relationship,” another source told ET. “Brandon is the EP of her show as well as her manager. Also, Kelly has always brought up wanting more children, which Brandon doesn’t.”

Thankfully, this divorce doesn’t seem like it’s going to get messy. In Clarkson’s divorce filing she has asked for the judge to enforce the couple’s prenuptial agreement. She has also asked for joint legal and physical custody of their two children, River Rose, 5, and Remington Alexander, 4.

“They are both heartbroken, but their plan is to put the kids first,” the insider says of the couple’s future plans. “Their focus is on co-parenting and moving forward, as this is the last place they ever thought they would be. They both understand divorce is never easy for children, but Kelly and Brandon are great parents. It’ll just take time.”
