Kelly Rowland Was Once Engaged to an NFL Star
Kelly Rowland is a happily married mother of two now but she’s had her share of heartbreak. The Destiny’s Child singer endured a painful and public split amid the end of engagement to Dallas Cowboys safety, Roy Williams. She documented the relationship and split in several of her songs.

Rowland was engaged to Williams and even gushed about her pending nuptials during an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. The two met several times before officially beginning to date around late 2003, early 2004. Williams was even an investor in Rowland’s film The Seat Filler. He proposed to Williams on Valentine’s Day after just three months of dating.
They called off their March 2005 wedding in January of the same year. Williams later revealed that he was the one who called things off, claiming he told his almost bride that they were rushing the process. “I sat her down on the bed and said, ‘Kelly, we don’t know each other well enough to get married. At the time, she was cool with it, but I ended up catching a lot of heat for doing the grown-up thing,” he said per Black Sports Online.
She told Necole Bitchie in an interview after their split: “I wanted that wedding. I wanted to be married,” she admitted. “You can just make wrong decisions in life. That was all part of growing up. I just think it’s important to trust your gut. I did a lot of soul-searching afterward, and I want to be married, so dating is part of that process.”
Rowland opened up about the breakup in ‘Still In Love With My Ex,’ a song from her album Ms. Kelly.
Roy Williams denies ever abusing Kelly Rowland
Rowland says the relationship with Williams taught her a lot. Unfortunately, she still had wounds from past relationships she needed to heal from.
In her song ‘Dirty Laundry,’ Rowland sang of being trapped in an abusive relationship.
“I was battered, he hit in a window like it was me until it shattered / He pulled me out, he said, ‘Don’t nobody love you but me, not your mama, not your daddy, and especially not B.,” the lyrics read.
Rowland never named her abuser but many assumed the athlete was the culprit. He denied the speculation in a Twitter post, writing, “So Kelly has a new song. Called #DirtyLaundry.. & whatever she’s saying in it ppl thinks it’s me. #wow #imnottheonlypersonshedated #wasntme,” he insists.
A Twitter user responded, implying another one of Rowland’s exes, Cuda Love, was the abuser. Love is a manager, who’s clients once included rappers Ma$e, Nelly and Cam’Ron.
Williams confirmed Love as the alleged abuser in a response to the fan’s tweet.
“#bingo but thats not my place to speak on it,” he wrote.

In spite of the heartache, Rowland found love. She announced in 2013 that she was engaged to Witherspoon, who is also her manager. While visiting The Queen Latifah Show, Rowland revealed Witherspoon proposed to her during a Skype call.
Their first son, Titan Jewell Witherspoon, was born in November 2014. They welcomed their second son, Noah Jon Witherspoon, in January 2021.
As far as maintaining a happy marriage, Rowland says it’s all about fun and spontaneity, telling People Magazine, “I’m like, ‘Well, if I have to play dress up and do role-play, honey, if I need to be Alicia tonight and give you a surprise in the middle of the night or something then it needs to happen. We spice things up a bit and keep it fun,” she said. “When we met each other, we had fun. Two years from now, we’ll have fun. I think if you hold that close to you, it can always show itself in your relationship.”
