Kendall and Kylie Jenner Under Fire for Refusing to Pay Clothing Line Workers Amid Pandemic
A month after Kylie Jenner faced backlash for allegedly forging tax documents and lying about her billionaire status, she has once again come under fire. But this time, she’s not the only one in her family taking the heat.
According to a recent report, both Kylie and Kendall Jenner have refused to pay factory workers in Bangladesh who create garments for their Kendall + Kylie fashion line amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Because of this, people have been calling out the Jenner sisters for leaving thousands of garment workers “starving” during this troubling time.
Kendall and Kylie Jenner have been accused of exploiting their garment workers
Former billionaire Kylie Jenner and her supermodel sister Kendall are being accused of exploiting others after reports surfaces that they have been refusing to pay factory workers who make garments for their fashion line.
According to a recent report published by fashion non-profit Remake, Global Brands Group — the company that owns Kendall + Kylie — has informed clothing makers that they will not be paid for garments made in February and March due to drops in sales amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Global Brands Group CEO, Rick Darling, wrote in a letter, “Given the unpredictability of the situation, our retail partners have cancelled orders, and existing inventory and product in production may have no sell-through. Consequently, we have no choice but to make the difficult decision to cancel all S/S 2020 orders from all suppliers (without liability).”
As a result of the company’s decision, more than 50,000 factory workers in Bangladesh and Los Angeles have been left in a vulnerable position. Some are even at risk of “starving to death” while others have lost out on receiving government assistance.
Fans are lobbying for the Jenner sisters to pay factory workers
After the report surfaced, many people took to social media to protest the company’s mistreatment of its workers and call out the Jenner sisters for not taking action.
“Kylie Jenner is the perfect example of performative activism. Posting about BLM on her social media just to appease her fans. But behind the scenes, her companies are unwilling to pay poor (mostly female) garment workers in Bangladesh. Make it make sense,” someone tweeted.
Some are even criticizing the reality stars — Kylie, especially — for not dipping into her own funds to pay those factory workers who are struggling financially.
“Kylie Jenner is (almost) a billionaire and can’t afford to pay her workers in Bangladesh? The rich really be greedy, and the poor really be generous,” another Twitter user penned.
“That is insane she makes billions of dollars but won’t pay her workers because her clothes won’t sell during covid!!! Bs!!!! @KylieJenner@kyliecosmetics is this how you represent you brand? Is your family eating? They are not!! pay them now!!!” someone else wrote.
Neither Kylie, Kendall, or Global Brands Group have yet to respond to Remake’s report.
