Kensington Palace is setting the record straight on Kate Middleton’s clothes and their protocol regarding what she wears. In a rare statement, a palace spokesperson has addressed a recent report the Princess of Wales’ outfit details would no longer be released

Palace releases clarification on Kate Middleton’s clothes: ‘no change’

On Feb. 11, 2025, a Kensington Palace spokesperson responded with a statement to a report from England’s The Sunday Times about putting the “focus” on “important issues” instead of Kate’s clothes by not releasing details on the royal’s outfits

“Over the last week, I have received numerous questions about a story regarding The Princess of Wales’s clothing and how Kensington Palace shares information about her outfits,” the spokesperson said in a statement shared with People

“To clarify, the comments that appeared in the article were from me, not The Princess of Wales,” the statement continued. “The comments that were reported should not be directly attributed to The Princess of Wales. To be clear, there has been no change in our approach to sharing information about Her Royal Highness’s clothing.”

The palace’s longtime approach of sometimes releasing outfit details on what Kate wears is seemingly unchanged. Meaning they’ll likely share the 43-year-old’s royal fashion IDs during big events like royal tours or state dinners.

The statement comes after various op-eds on the subject which argued Kate’s style shouldn’t be minimized. Why? Because it helps the British economy and boosts designers’ profiles. (It’s commonly referred to as The Kate Effect where items typically sell out after she’s seen wearing them.)

So, what kicked off the whole Kate clothes saga? An article from The Sunday Times titled “Princess of Wales: Focus on my work, not my wardrobe.” In it, a royal source was quoted saying Kate “wants the focus to be on the really important issues, the people and the causes she is spotlighting.”The outlet also reported Kensington Palace would no longer share details on Kate’s outfits.

The full quote read as follows: “There is an absolute feeling that [the public work] is not about what the princess is wearing. She wants the focus to be on the really important issues, the people and the causes she is spotlighting.”

“There will always be an appreciation of what the princess is wearing from some of the public and she gets that. But do we need to be officially always saying what she is wearing? No. The style is there but it’s about the substance.”
