Khloé Kardashian on Co-Parenting With Tristan Thompson: ‘Tristan Is So Great and Trusts Me as a Mom’
Khloé Kardashian was in a relationship with NBA player Tristan Thompson for three years. However, after Thompson allegedly cheated on her with former family friend, Jordyn Woods, the couple called it quits in February 2019.
But despite their tumultuous past, the pair have remained dedicated parents to their two-year-old daughter True. They’ve even maintained a civil co-parenting relationship that has only gotten stronger with time.
Khloé Kardashian had concerns about co-parenting with Tristan Thompson at first
When Kardashian and Thompson called it quits in February 2019, their post-breakup relationship was pretty rocky.
Though the NBA player tried his best to get Kardashian to forgive him for cheating, she wouldn’t budge at first and maintained that she was done with him for good. But despite her feelings toward Thompson at that time, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star was still respectful toward him, especially when their daughter True was around.
When they first broke up, Kardashian and Thompson maintained a civil co-parenting relationship in order for True to be surrounded by both parents. However, when it came time for Thompson to return to Boston for the NBA basketball season, Kardashian questioned whether they would be able to keep their co-parenting dynamic going as she struggled with the idea of her daughter being miles away from her.
“So I have a serious question to ask you. To co-parent is a different beast, it’s probably the hardest thing I’ve ever had to figure out,” Kardashian shared with mom Kris Jenner on an April 2019 episode of KUWTK. “‘Cause you get territorial. Like, ‘This is my baby. Why are you telling me what to do?’ You forget, oh no, it’s both your baby.”
“Co-parenting’s hard and you also have to, like, respect both parents,” she continued. “But I don’t know what I feel comfortable with. I’m sure he won’t make me do anything I don’t feel comfortable doing, but then is that even fair for True to not see her dad? Because that’s going to be a long however many months.”
Khloé Kardashian learned how to co-parent effectively from parents
Though adapting to a co-parenting lifestyle wasn’t easy for Kardashian at first, she has since learned to work effectively with Thompson to raise their daughter.
Although she was devastated when Thompson was unfaithful, she eventually realized that he’s still a good father to their little girl and has since praised him for being consistent and present in True’s life.
“I know her dad is a great person,” the Good American founder said during a 2019 interview on Laura Wasser’s Divorce Sucks! podcast. “I know how much he loves her and cares about her. So I want him to be there.”
Kardashian’s feelings toward her ex and their co-parenting relationship come from the example she found in her own parents — Kris Jenner and the late Robert Kardashian — who co-parented their four children successfully after they ended their marriage.
“My parents were the most perfect example and I was really blessed and fortunate to have that as my example and to see that,” Kardashian shared during a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “And even with my stepdad, the integration of all of that and how my dad and my stepdad dealt with one another was really just such a beautiful thing to witness. They played golf once a week and I’m sure that wasn’t easy for my dad but he did it for us. And so having that really selfless example was awesome for us.”
She continued, “I think with all of us, whether it be Kourtney and Scott, or Tristan and myself, we definitely try to mirror that and always keep it about the kids.”
Khloé Kardashian says her co-parenting relationship with Tristan Thompson is based on trust
Though Thompson has returned to Boston for the current NBA season, he and Kardashian continue to maintain a loving and effective co-parenting dynamic.
Although distance worked against them in the past, Kardashian noted to Clarkson that she and Thompson trust each other, which she says is the foundation of their relationship.
“But with Tristan, it’s a trust thing. Tristan is so great and trusts me as a mom and knows I’m always going to do the right thing for True,” Kardashian explained. “So he really doesn’t tell me ‘no’ a lot of the times and I’m grateful for that because I think as moms we sort of think we have the right to know what we’re doing with our kids.”
She added, “So it’s just I think great communication and trust is the most important thing with raising kids.”
